TOKYO - Asian equities posted mixed results on Tuesday after Wall Street advanced amid declining oil prices.

Investors across the region continued evaluating the effects of last week's coordinated U.S.-Japan currency move, according to market analysts.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index declined 0.3 percent to 63,585.58, while the U.S. dollar rose slightly to 157.51 yen from 157.18 yen. The euro stood at $1.1511, nearly unchanged from $1.1514. The dollar had traded near 160 yen before authorities intervened to strengthen the yen following its drop to multi-decade lows.

Analysts noted that the success of such interventions remains unclear since they fail to tackle underlying economic factors such as inflation, interest rates and differing economic performances.

A report from BMI, part of Fitch Solutions, stated that U.S. involvement adds significant signaling power compared to Japan acting solo, and commitments to further steps may deter speculators, though any U.S. role could be limited in scale.

Matthew Ryan, head of market strategy at Ebury, observed that the recent action might prove effective as it indicates a genuine shift in policy rather than an isolated defensive step.

He added that this marks a historic shift for the yen and boosts confidence in a mildly positive outlook for the currency.

South Korea's Kospi dropped 1.3 percent to 6,174.72. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 1.2 percent to 9,129.00. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.5 percent to 25,881.99, while the Shanghai Composite edged up 0.2 percent to 3,802.61.

Markets stayed volatile due to fluctuations in chipmaker stocks, which have swung sharply amid questions over whether AI-driven revenue growth will hold.

Wall Street climbed on Monday as lower oil prices eased inflation concerns. The S&P 500 surged 1.5 percent and sits just 0.1 percent below its summer peak.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 693 points, or 1.3 percent, to a record high, while the Nasdaq composite rose 2.1 percent.

In early Asian energy trading, U.S. crude benchmark increased 84 cents to $81.18 per barrel. Brent crude rose $1.15 to $84.92 per barrel.

The prior day, oil prices fell more than 5 percent after President Donald Trump announced over the weekend he would delay new strikes on Iran following advice from regional allies.

Brent crude swung between $72 and $102 last month amid shifting concerns over the Iran conflict and the resumption of tanker traffic through the Persian Gulf.

The 10-year Treasury yield declined to 4.68 percent from 4.75 percent at Friday's close, though it stays well above the 3.97 percent level seen before the Iran conflict.
