New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani seized on SpaceX completing its landmark IPO and Elon Musk attaining trillionaire status to advance his policy agenda.

"Reason number one trillion why we should tax the rich," Mamdani posted on X after Musk became the first person to reach that wealth level on Friday.

Musk achieved the record when SpaceX shares surged in their market debut on Friday, closing at one hundred fifty dollars each compared with the initial price of one hundred thirty five dollars.

Already the planet's wealthiest individual, the surge left Musk far ahead of the runner up, Google's Larry Page, whose fortune now equals roughly one quarter of Musk's total.

The mayor's remarks fit his long standing platform. The progressive leader ran on promises to increase taxes on high earners, and a recent city levy on expensive second homes drew criticism from affluent property owners.

Musk had publicly opposed Mamdani and endorsed his opponent, Governor Andrew Cuomo, during last year's New York mayoral contest.

Despite their differences, Mamdani noted that both men aim to improve efficiency and cut waste. Last month the mayor unveiled a Commission on Government Efficiency modeled after the federal DOGE initiative led by Musk.
