I had finally mastered breastfeeding: My milk supply was established, I maintained a strong output, and my infant latched effectively. According to all indicators, matters progressed without issue. Yet amid feeding times, an unexpected irritation surfaced that caught me off guard. At times, especially the last session of the evening, it neared fury.

"I am unsure if I can continue," I messaged my spouse one day while he was away. "It feels as if my skin crawls. I want to burst through a barrier."

Although those emotions faded once the feeding ended, they returned during sessions more frequently than before.

Naming the sensation made me feel less isolated

When I mentioned this during a postpartum visit, my physician appeared uncertain. Searching online for "breastfeeding rage" eventually connected me to descriptions of "breastfeeding aversion" that matched my experience closely.

One 2023 poll of over 5,500 Australian mothers showed that roughly one in five had encountered this.

Assigning a term to my feelings proved affirming - it allowed me to cease doubting my affection for my child or falling into shame while counting down the minutes until a feed concluded.

Yet it also prompted me to ask: Why had this topic remained unknown to me until now?

I sought ways to ease the nursing process

After gaining some insight into breastfeeding aversion, I tested several approaches to manage the unpleasant feelings and reactions that arose repeatedly.

Diverting my attention - for instance, via a podcast, a program, or calming sounds during nighttime feeds - provided noticeable help.

I also considered that excess stimulation played a role, so when diversion failed, I opted to nurse in a calm space with minimal sensory input.

However, when I simply could not push past the unease, I allowed myself to pause. This involved passing the baby to my husband for bottle feeding while I expressed milk.

Moving to pumping eased the strain - along with some remorse

Around three months into breastfeeding, the irritation grew so strong at moments that I felt compelled to suddenly pull my baby away from my breast.

That realization struck me. Nursing ought to foster a positive bond for us both. Yet I questioned whether forcing through the distress might instead create friction and bitterness instead of closeness. I recognized the need for adjustment.

Choosing to cease direct nursing proved difficult - and it arrived with persistent guilt. I knew many mothers eager to nurse who faced supply or latch challenges, so I questioned if my reason sufficed. Within days of shifting to pumping, though, a heavy weight lifted. Pumping somehow avoided the same reactions and physical responses that nursing provoked. Most crucially, I stopped dreading feeds with my son.

My sole regret remains not switching earlier. The notion that motherhood requires constant self-denial had taken root before my son arrived. I focused so much on his requirements that I overlooked my own. Yet my experience held value too.

Interestingly, the bond I anticipated from nursing emerged only after I stopped. One quiet afternoon at home, while holding him and offering a bottle, he grasped my fingers with his small hand. I finally sensed the connection I had sought.
