Israel has channeled billions of shekels into building the Intelligence Campus in the Negev, a project of utmost national significance. The Treasury's suggestion for a restricted transportation approach threatened to create severe commuting disruptions. The Prime Minister's decisive approval of a high-capacity light rail system protects the initiative's viability and establishes Beersheba as Israel's innovation capital. Negev residents extend their thanks for championing the needs of tens of thousands of soldiers and workers.

Ambitious national projects like the transformation of the Negev often face bureaucratic and political hurdles. Budgetary constraints frequently threaten to undermine progress. This pattern marked the massive effort to shift intelligence bases to Lakiya in the Negev, initiated in 2003 with a government mandate to relocate IDF units south.

Through our work with the Israel for the Negev Association, we campaigned for years to realize this vision - overcoming strong resistance from then-Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi and top intelligence officials - before pivoting to the critical issue of transport access. It was evident that lacking a comprehensive, swift rail connection, the daily influx of soldiers and staff would falter, jeopardizing operations and stunting Beersheba's tech ecosystem growth.

The Finance Ministry's recent push to undermine the plan proposed a bus rapid transit (BRT) line between Beersheba and Lakiya, an option dismissed by most specialists. Unlike light rail (LRT), which handles around 7,500 passengers hourly, BRT manages only about 3,000 and remains vulnerable to road congestion, promising routine travel ordeals.

This week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu firmly opted for the light rail from Beersheba to extend directly to the Intelligence Campus gates in Lakiya - the inaugural line in the metropolitan framework. This ruling addresses a longstanding challenge, embodying a forward-thinking strategy for Negev advancement and fulfilling a landmark vision.

Opting for light rail over subpar BRT alternatives, based on expert advice, transcends technicalities. It strategically prevents the 12-billion-shekel national campus from isolation.

Accepting the Treasury's hybrid scheme - light rail in Beersheba paired with BRT to the campus - would spell disaster: soldiers from central Israel facing three transfers reliant on traffic-plagued Highway 60 buses, arriving exhausted by 11 a.m. Such delays undermine productivity in a cutting-edge intelligence operation.

The Prime Minister's choice eliminates this inefficiency. The light rail accommodates current and projected personnel flows, linking Beersheba seamlessly to the campus.

Negev communities have anticipated this breakthrough for years. It delivers the growth anchors the periphery demands, especially after war-related setbacks.

A Billion-Shekel Transformation

The light rail forms a key element of government decision No. 3474 for Beersheba's metropolitan growth, budgeted at roughly one billion shekels. It targets economic expansion, better living standards, security, and infrastructure to retain youth in the region.

Negev progress hinges on a robust Beersheba as the central hub. Currently, despite its role in jobs and housing, the city lags due to inferior incentives versus nearby locales, causing resource drain and hindering talent attraction.

This light rail endorsement signals Beersheba's leadership in development. Enhanced mobility fuels initiatives like the Innovation District, defense firms, military communications staffing - synergizing with engineering academia and high-tech - plus NVIDIA, Microsoft expansions, a new high-tech park, and Sheba Negev hospital. These position Beersheba to actualize Ben-Gurion's Negev flourishing dream.

The rail unites these efforts into a vibrant tech-economic hub.

A Major Economic Catalyst

The scale is immense: shifting intelligence and communications to the Negev transcends military logistics, representing the state's biggest economic shift lately. It promises 60 billion shekels in regional impact over 20 years via construction, jobs, and ripple effects.

Integrating advanced military tech, defense growth, academia, and industry sparks multipliers: foreign capital, boosted spending, elevated services - mirroring Tel Aviv's high-tech evolution.

This decision maximizes public funds and transport upgrades for nationwide gains.

Praise Where Earned

As a dedicated Negev advocate, I often critique leaders for stalling periphery progress and neglecting vast Negev-Galilee areas covering 80% of Israel, contrasting the strained center.

Today, I commend Prime Minister Netanyahu for stepping up - prioritizing vision, grasping strategic needs, recognizing resilience via connectivity and tech.

Mr. Prime Minister, you favored national goals over narrow interests, affirming the Negev's security role. As campus gates open, we forge prosperity tracks. Beersheba gains vital links, escaping gridlock toward innovation primacy.

To fellow activists and Negev residents: citizen action alters fates; principled persistence overcomes fiscal myopia.
