NATO has revealed plans to expand its cadre of qualified drone operators by a factor of five before the close of 2027. The goal is to equip partner forces for the fast-evolving battlefield dynamics now visible in Ukraine.

Secretary General Mark Rutte introduced the Drone Edge program, which calls for allied nations to direct more than $40 billion toward counter-drone systems across the coming five years.

Rutte told attendees at the NATO Summit Defense Industry Forum in Ankara that allies will prepare five times the current number of drone pilots within their services by the target date.

The alliance intends to open a dedicated counter-drone marketplace, enabling members to acquire emerging technologies quickly and in volume. The effort draws inspiration from a Ukrainian online platform that lets frontline units order drones and electronic-warfare gear directly.

NATO will broaden its Flight Training Europe initiative, already used by twenty allies for aircrew instruction, to encompass specialized courses for drone operators at sites across the continent.

Rutte noted that drones have transformed the nature of contemporary combat, serving as a decisive element in Ukraine, the Middle East, and alliance operations.

He added that repeated drone intrusions have prompted NATO to accelerate large-scale deployment and operation of these systems while strengthening defensive measures.

Ukrainian battlefields now feature fixed-wing strike and reconnaissance platforms alongside compact first-person-view quadcopters and air-defense interceptors.

Training duration varies by platform. Ukrainian sources indicate that basic FPV proficiency can require up to a month, after which interceptor skills may be acquired in days. British trainers report a minimum of sixty hours of intensive practice.

Recent visits to Ukraine's Killhouse Academy highlighted short courses that have introduced thousands of service members and civilians to FPV fundamentals, reflecting the technology's growing societal reach.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated at the Ankara forum that Ukraine possesses the world's largest and most advanced drone-warfare capacity.

Although NATO faces different pressures than Kyiv, Ukrainian leaders and analysts urge the West to accelerate preparation for drone-centric battlefields.

Allied forces continue to integrate both offensive and defensive unmanned systems, and the newly announced training expansion is expected to bolster readiness for future engagements.

Rutte concluded that the alliance is constructing a drone-ready posture by adopting advanced technologies, supporting transatlantic industry, and applying lessons from the Ukrainian front.
