When invited to visit my closest friend at her grandparents' charming cottage along the Maine coast, I looked forward to wandering the small coastal villages, relaxing in the yard, and losing track of the hours.

One recommended outing stood out and needed advance arrangements: a day visit to Monhegan Island.

This compact island without cars can only be reached by vessel, so I purchased a fifty-three dollar round-trip ticket on the Monhegan Boat Line.

This is how the experience unfolded.

We boarded the seven a.m. sailing on a historic vessel.

To maximize our time on the island, my friend and I chose the first ferry of the day at seven in the morning.

We soon learned this summer departure offered an added highlight: passage on the storied Laura B.

Constructed in nineteen forty-three, the compact workboat transported troops and cargo across the Pacific throughout World War II. Beginning in nineteen forty-six, it hauled lobster catches from Maine to Boston and New York.

Today the vessel operates from Port Clyde, transporting passengers along with mail and cargo to Monhegan Island.

The crossing proved simple yet appealing.

The compact mailboat features a plain wooden cabin with four rows of seating and two restrooms.

The forward deck held stacks of supplies and drinks destined for island shops, though many passengers chose to stand outside among the cargo.

Following a seventy-minute crossing, we arrived at Monhegan Island.

The journey lasted just over an hour. As it concluded, we passed through early mist and eased into the tranquil harbor, which resembled a painting bathed in soft morning light.

We refreshed ourselves at the dockside cafe before exploring.

Our initial stop after disembarking was The Barnacle, offering keepsakes, beverages, and baked goods. We purchased breakfast sandwiches, chai lattes, and a freshly made energy bar to sustain our walk.

Afterward we strolled along the gravel main road and sensed a step back in time. No vehicles appeared, only a map stand operating on the honor system, rustic signs, and a single-room white schoolhouse.

A brief climb up a steep slope brought us to the Monhegan Museum and lighthouse, revealing a sweeping vista of the quiet harbor and surrounding cottages.

From there we crossed a meadow dotted with butterflies and entered a cool woodland, reaching the far shore within ten minutes.

The eastern shore features striking cliffs.

Despite prior sailing experience along New England and years living in Southern California, the dramatic bluffs of Monhegan Island impressed me greatly.

We followed winding dirt trails and log footbridges along the shoreline, each bend revealing fresh scenes: a stony inlet, calm tide pools, bright wildflowers, and a weathered shipwreck.

A local event added genuine small-town appeal.

Hand-lettered posters advertising the yearly Cardboard Regatta appeared everywhere, inviting residents to paddle homemade cardboard boats from Swim Beach to Fish Beach.

We joined what seemed the entire community to view this distinctive August tradition and felt fortunate to witness it unexpectedly.

We relaxed at an island brewery.

We next visited Monhegan Brewing Company, its exterior lined with lobster traps, for a sampler flight and crunchy pickle chips.

We also purchased a bottle of their house root beer for the return trip.

The return voyage used a larger ferry with added comforts.

Our trip back was aboard the Elizabeth Ann, a roomier modern vessel equipped with a heated cabin, two restrooms, and an observation deck.

The homeward route included a scenic loop around the island accompanied by narrated facts broadcast over speakers.

The crossing took under an hour. Although the Elizabeth Ann offered more comfortable seating, we remained at the bow for the finest views.

The outing proved a delightful and memorable journey.

After arriving in Port Clyde we enjoyed ice cream cones from Village Ice Cream while seated near Marshall Point Lighthouse, known from the film Forrest Gump. It formed a fitting close to the day.

In all, this distinctive outing offers a chance to disconnect, stay present, and find inspiration. I highly recommend a visit to this tranquil, welcoming, and scenic island.
