Booking a medical visit during school hours always brings a wave of guilt. I request the latest available time. If that fails, I check the school calendar and run the numbers on drive time, missed lessons, and a possible early return. Usually no perfect window exists, so the appointment gets scheduled anyway.

Rural North Carolina means providers are rarely nearby and convenient slots between dismissal and dinner are rare. A Tuesday morning visit at 10:30 sometimes has to happen. The guilt lingers each time.

I want my child in class every day. One absence can snowball into unfinished work and confusion. Still, health comes first, and the two duties sometimes clash. That tension is why perfect-attendance awards have never sat well with me.

My Child Remains the Top Priority

Schools correctly stress attendance because students need instruction, steady routines, and connections with teachers and peers. Families facing repeated absences deserve help to restore stability.

Yet a flawless record does not measure effort. Children cannot pick when illness strikes, when a specialist opens a slot, or when a parent lacks paid leave. They cannot fix a broken car, extend bus routes, or shorten long drives to appointments.

Self-employment gives me scheduling room that many hourly workers lack. Those parents weigh lost wages and boss reactions before every early exit. Factors such as housing, transport, or ongoing health conditions stay hidden when certificates are handed out, yet they shape every outcome.

One Illness Should Not Cancel a Year of Hard Work

Parents already juggle tough calls on sick days: stay home or send the child anyway? Both attendance and keeping contagious students home matter. Awards for unbroken streaks create pressure to ignore that balance.

A single fever in fall can end any chance at a spring certificate. I will not delay needed care because of an attendance record, nor teach my child that pushing through illness proves dedication.

Staying home when appropriate or attending an appointment can both be responsible acts. Returning after a setback often shows more strength than never missing a day.

Schools Should Celebrate Improvement and Resilience

Chronic absenteeism needs attention and support, but perfection need not be the only prize. Recognize gains between grading periods, shorter milestones, and students who recover from rough patches.

I will keep minimizing missed time, checking calendars, and helping with makeup work. A little guilt may remain. My child may never receive a perfect-attendance award, and that outcome feels acceptable. Learning self-care, consideration for others, and the value of returning after difficulty matters far more.
