Around age 10, my little sister misplaced one of her cherished Webkinz toys - those plush collectibles that were all the rage back then. I proposed selling her some custom insurance to safeguard against more mishaps. She agreed, marking my earliest dip into the family trade.

My father's great-grandfather established the insurance company, and today both my parents are deeply involved. Avery Insurance has woven itself into my life from day one. Whether en route to athletic practices or over family meals, shop talk was constant. Far from resenting it, I was captivated by the idea of managing a company even as a kid.

Still, I was determined to launch my professional journey elsewhere. Deep down, I knew it was essential. I aimed to hone my skills and achieve accomplishments on my own terms before pondering a role as the fifth generation at Avery Insurance.

I saw a chance to shape our family heritage

I headed from New Hampshire to study in Denver. I tried my hand in tech sales, then landed at a startup with stints in Colorado and New York City.

In New York's startup scene, I was immersed among top talents. I absorbed invaluable lessons simply by being part of that vibrant network of ambitious young founders. It was exhilarating.

That said, conversations with my parents about the family firm never ceased. Last year, assessing the company's position, I recognized the perfect moment to step in. My parents required fresh support.

They never pushed or invited me explicitly, yet I believed that to truly influence our legacy, action was needed now. Leaving New York was tough, but I was certain I'd regret passing up the opportunity.

I focused on forging ties with emerging leaders

Upon returning, I stayed with my parents initially. We mesh well, but juggling them as parents, housemates, and superiors proved overwhelming. Securing my own apartment became urgent.

Teaming up with my mom and dad proved rewarding. I hold immense admiration for their dedication, witnessed up close. In turn, they value my external experiences, allowing room for innovative approaches. Though insurance remains a traditional field, I'm driven to bring our firm into the modern era.

While the job progressed smoothly, I longed for the peer network from New York - that buzz from fellow entrepreneurs. Here in New Hampshire, generating that drive solo was challenging.

I began assembling a local circle for young go-getters, and it's yielding results. Just last week, I co-hosted a gathering for entrepreneurs under 40. I'm gratified to have nurtured this group.

My sister opted out of the business, and we all support that

Often in the office, my nearly 90-year-old grandfather visits and spots me at his longtime workstation. It must feel surreal to him. Such moments have deepened my family connections through this role.

Family life extends beyond work, though. My sister showed no interest in the firm, and no one minds. She now leads wellness and yoga retreats. I admire how she identified her true passion outside our business and pursued it wholeheartedly.

At 27 with no children yet, if I were a parent, I'd mirror my own parents' hands-off style with my sister and me. They encouraged us to excel in whatever path suited us best. Sustaining a fifth-generation enterprise demands commitment, so I'd never coerce anyone into it. To embrace that responsibility, one must truly desire it.
