My grandmother developed ovarian cancer in her seventies. The first sign appeared on New Year's Eve. Or so my grandmother concluded.

Weight loss followed. She had battled her weight for most of her adult years, so the sudden drop in pounds raised alarms. She had exemplified a healthy older woman until the cancer diagnosis.

Gramps, by contrast, faced health challenges from birth. He was born with hydrocephalus, or water on the brain. Repeatedly, he confronted medical problems. Military service left him with back issues, and heart troubles began in his late forties. He retired on permanent disability after his third heart attack in his fifties. He dealt with heart disease, testicular cancer that he overcame, and throat cancer that removed his voice. It also led to cardiac arrest long enough that we feared brain damage. He escaped that outcome. Gramps was never robust, yet always resilient.

My grandfather feared my grandmother's diagnosis deeply

Both felt fear, each in their own manner. My grandparents possessed strong wills and the firmest determination. Born to immigrants, they worked hard and advanced in their careers, demonstrating to me the worth of steady effort. Gramps worked through nearly every difficulty. Accustomed to fighting various illnesses for most of his life, he kept moving ahead. Sickness never weakened his resolve.

Despite his strength, news of my grandmother's illness frightened him. He had always expected to depart first. He was the one who had been ill. She served as the steady presence in physical health. Never having planned to live without her, he lacked knowledge of many tasks. Household management had fallen to my grandmother. When cancer struck, my grandfather felt adrift in numerous ways.

Their marriage faced difficulties

Although their marriage had not always been smooth, they had always cared for each other. My grandmother, married twice before, declared the third time the charm. It was a cliche, yet accurate. Gram and Gramps enjoyed socializing, travel, and outings on the wooden boat we owned. Weekends in my youth brought visits from their friends. While Gram and Gramps grew physically frailer, illness shaped them into finer versions of themselves.

They passed months apart, yet at the identical minute

When Gram entered a rehabilitation center for an extended stay, Gramps' condition worsened. He was admitted to the hospital in July, and we shared his final hours. He died on July 7. Gram, one of the strongest women I knew, displayed grace and firm resolve after his passing. She comforted us by reading a letter she and Gramps had prepared together about their final wishes. I still keep that letter.

Gram died three months later. Notably, it occurred at the precise hour and minute as my grandfather. Their steady commitment to each other while fighting illnesses that claimed their lives showed me the true form of devotion.

It was striking to see them fall in love once more and release all prior hurts. Until they became ill, I had given little thought to the marriage vow about sickness and health. Through their fresh pledge during the toughest periods of their marriage and lives, I finally grasped its meaning.

Marriage extended past the early stage of affection and grew into something much larger: steadfast devotion until the end.
