We had never considered ourselves cruise enthusiasts

Our family had never sailed together. Honestly, it was not our usual style. We preferred self-catering chalets and driving ourselves on safari.

Raised in South Africa, my father worked for a government agency that oversaw wildlife reserves. We stayed in those areas at no cost, so most holidays involved simple lodging in some of the country's most scenic spots. I value that privilege more fully now.

After dad died, mom chose to use some insurance funds so we could honor his life. We sought an experience we had never shared as a family of four.

Initially a cruise seemed the last option. We imagined crowds and sales pitches, the opposite of our past travels. Yet the cost was reasonable and we avoided heavy planning while grieving, so we booked.

The voyage became the simplest travel we had known

In 2014 the three of us sailed for seven days and visited six Mediterranean cities.

With lodging, meals, and transport included in one price, the cruise cost less than any land itinerary we might have arranged. The practical benefit mattered even more than the savings.

I enjoy travel, yet it rarely feels relaxed. Debates arise over routes, buses, and passports. Those tensions rise further when family members are also carrying grief.

The cruise eased the mental weight of a tough journey

Without daily choices about meals, destinations, or transport, we focused on being together, just as dad would have wished.

Each of us processed grief differently, yet for the first time since his death we could simply share time without managing logistics.

We joined evening shows, tried deck aerobics, watched fellow passengers, and introduced mom to strawberry daiquiris (virgin versions to save money). Those shared moments proved more meaningful than the ports we visited.

We stayed non-cruise fans, yet we saw its value

After dad's death mom kept the free stays at the conservation areas. My sister now lives in Dubai, and when she visits we return to those same self-catering trips filled with memories of dad, this time with homemade strawberry daiquiris.

Who would have guessed a cruise would help us treasure those earlier family adventures in a fresh light?
