Ever since our three children were young, our household has focused on economical trips. We have explored free exhibits in New York City, trekked through Yosemite, and savored relaxed beach getaways in Mexico.

When our eldest finished high school last year, we chose a special farewell journey with a more generous budget to mark the occasion.

Our idea was a three-week adventure across England.

As the main planner, I aimed to craft a UK adventure we would always remember. For fans of British literature, shows, and films like us, nothing seemed more special than lodging in a traditional English country home.

After searching online, I discovered an impressive choice: Severn End, a 15th-century estate in Worcestershire.

Although the roughly $500 nightly rate far surpassed our usual $200 target, my spouse and I agreed it merited the extra expense. We went ahead and reserved five nights.

The property left us amazed

Months afterward, as we turned near the small town of Upton, Severn End appeared in its full Tudor splendor. My mouth fell open at the sight of the three-level timber-framed structure with lattice windows and multiple chimneys rising before us. Our host, Sir Nicholas, the eighth baronet of Lechmere, whose relatives still use one section, demonstrated the old front door, and we entered quickly.

The five of us moved through the home as if in a fantasy, each discovering a unique space. The entrance featured a large brick hearth and mounted animal trophies, while bedrooms offered grand wardrobes and wooden walls. A drawing room suited both dancing and streaming shows, and the rental included two and a half fine bathrooms, which is rare in UK stays.

The grounds behind the house offered paths ideal for leisurely strolls. We settled in to savor our personal version of classic English countryside life.

Our visit matched every hope

During the five days, we explored the Malvern Hills and visited the Cotswolds. Yet we found no need to leave Severn End for a wonderful experience. The estate itself created the magic.

Living in such an unusual setting provided endless enjoyment. I read a family history book about the home's long past. My children tried croquet on the lawn. Each evening at dusk, we walked to the river Severn, where I pictured scenes from classic tales unfolding on the water. We also captured many photos with the mounted heads.

The trip offered an added benefit

Although activities were plentiful, the manor stay allowed us to relax fully, a rare treat amid our regular routines.

Knowing we had invested in this upscale lodging, we took time to unwind on the property, sharing meals outside and rising late in the large beds. One afternoon I sat in the bathroom window seat and watched birds, an activity I seldom enjoy at home.

When people ask if the manor house expense was justified, I answer yes without hesitation. The value of calm, fresh time with my family in a setting that brings stories to life cannot be measured. That, after all, is the true purpose of travel.
