Next came her clothing red heart socks worn floral pants and a faded pink top. An outfit I might have reserved for casual play rather than a celebration.

Minor moments carried the biggest weight

We visited National Harbor near Washington where she intended to create a bear with saved gift cards.

Upon arrival I asked about stopping for coffee first. Yes she answered happily. That reply caught me off guard. She was not only accepting agreement but practicing how to extend it.

We entered a bookstore owned by a local Black family still holding hands. She chose a chapter book then added a Gracie's Corner title from her younger years that I thought she had moved past.

I nearly objected but recalled the plan. Yes and yes.

Watching her use the freedom proved rewarding

At the bear workshop she chose carefully. She selected the birthday bear matching her age to allow extra accessories rather than a pricier animal that would limit her funds. This fit her habit of watching expenses closely.

By midday the answers kept coming. A stop at the candy shop for a few sweets. An ice cream option appeared yet she chose on her own to wait until after the meal.

No reminders needed. She showed sound thinking because she sensed trust and met it.

My own limits needed testing as well

Later she wanted a ride on the Capital Wheel. She felt prepared while I did not.

Her father had arrived and they approached the large wheel together as I trailed behind taking pictures. At the booth he requested three tickets.

Wait Mom you are joining she asked. I paused then said yes. She cheered loudly.
