A colleague recently inquired about employment options for her son who had just finished his degree. Despite a demanding course schedule, athletic commitments, and extracurricular roles that secured him a spot at a top school, he had never taken on paid work.

"That oversight is on me," she admitted.

My own children have held positions, yet I recognize similar shortcomings in my approach. Amid the advantages of a middle-class upbringing, we overlooked instruction in fundamental abilities such as deep-cleaning restrooms, managing repayments, and monitoring personal well-being.

I packed in as much guidance as possible during their first 18 years, but running a small enterprise alongside family duties left gaps. I ended up offering hurried tips during drives to their dorms: always keep beverages nearby, even on bathroom trips; locate the campus health center; choose front seats in class to connect with instructors; and avoid large shared drink containers.

We skipped some essentials for thriving on their own, yet I trust there is still time to share useful pointers.

Cleaning the Toilet

The restroom often ranks as the least welcoming spot in my sons' shared spaces. Grime along the inner rim matches the scattered droplets around the seat hinges.

To avoid exposing them to harsh cleaners, I realize I never passed along a scrubbing tool. They handled sink wipes, floor vacuuming, and laundry, but toilet duty stayed off-limits. I managed the brush myself or arranged for outside help. A handover should have occurred at some point, but my own cleaning discomfort and their reluctance to reach into the bowl created a gap.

I take some comfort in knowing poor sanitation rarely leads to illness, yet to build capable adults who meet social norms, I now stress the appeal of good hygiene and order for future relationships while seeking ways to encourage the habit.

Lack of Experience with Money Management

To build money sense, my spouse and I opened checking accounts and reviewed spending plans with our children during senior year. What we missed was practice with settling bills or clearing debts, skills vital for building credit, securing housing, and reaching financial independence.

We thought we were progressing when one son purchased his first used truck and we covered part of the cost through a family loan. He was to repay us monthly in any amount, but the plan faded when he viewed small sums as insignificant.

He cleared the balance at once, and we overlooked the missed installments. When another child later ignored a similar agreement, I saw the error. The point deserves another try, perhaps with firmer follow-through or a bank loan that carries built-in penalties. That remains my key suggestion.

Reading the Room and Reading Themselves

The phrase points to noticing one's own state amid surroundings, both mentally and physically. I had urged my children to gauge social settings, but I now encourage them to check in with themselves more closely.

By senior year I had them book their own medical visits, yet I still stepped in on school attendance decisions tied to illness or rules. This may have reduced their independence, as one son reached the emergency room after brushing off a cold that turned into nighttime chest pain during his first college year. He received a diagnosis of sudden pericarditis that strained his heart. Three nights in the hospital followed, plus six months of outpatient care; the episode was frightening. I could not grasp how fast an active young person's condition declined. "Is this uncommon?" I asked the doctor on duty.

"Fairly standard after strep," came the reply, before the physician asked my son, "Was your throat sore?"

"Not really."

When sending our youngest off to start college across the country this autumn, we embraced and said our goodbyes. "Enjoy it - these years stand out," I told her, then added that feeling isolated at times is common and discomfort is acceptable. I repeated what I may have needed to hear: discomfort fuels development. Perhaps that is how I can view these parenting gaps, as chances to improve, since growth is ultimately why we pursue higher education.
