For years I believed I was following the standard approach for parents.

When either of my sons faced trouble in class or felt down about learning something new, I would pull from my list of past wins to offer guidance. I described my selection for the National Junior Honor Society. I noted my role as editor of the school paper. I recounted targets I pursued with effort until I reached them.

These accounts seemed to me like positive proof that hard work leads to results and obstacles can be handled. My sons, though, appeared to take away a different message.

"I am not as capable as you."

"That is not an area where I excel."

I came to see that my accounts of success were not received as planned. What I viewed as support came across as a benchmark. They focused on the clean ending instead of the effort, doubt, and chance involved in those wins. They measured their ongoing efforts against my finished results, and that stemmed from my choice not to share the complete picture.

I began sharing my own setbacks, and the dynamic shifted

One evening I described scoring a 10 on a physics exam. Not ten points deducted, but ten points total out of one hundred. My instructor remarked that at least he could tell I had not copied from the classmate beside me who scored perfectly. "Nancy performed ten times better than you," he noted while returning the paper. The line has stayed with me for years, and I passed it along to my teens. They found it amusing.

Next came the tale of the driving instructor who shouted that I ranked as the poorest student he had ever instructed. I had just struck three cones and carved an unplanned route across the lot, yet the moment felt crushing then. Now it serves as a shared family tale.

The more awkward the incident, the more my teens seem drawn to it. They listen to descriptions of my youthful mishaps with attention they never give to my wins. They even pose extra questions. "What happened next?" "How did you recover?" They seek specifics on how their composed mother managed major stumbles from her past.

Through these accounts I have noticed they gain an outlook my success stories never supplied: context.

They benefit from recognizing that setbacks do not end everything

Young people now live amid conditions where errors can seem lasting. Any uneasy instant might be captured, posted, and viewed repeatedly. School demands begin sooner, and entry to college appears tougher. Online platforms deliver constant examples of others managing tasks more smoothly.

I recall similar feelings at their age. The distinction now is that time has shown me how many events that once seemed disastrous proved manageable.

The low physics mark did not shape my future path. The driving lesson mishap did not block me from earning a license. The moments that troubled me at night as a teen have turned into light dinner conversation. When I pass these along to my sons, I provide proof that mistakes form a standard part of life.

Reviewing the past has also affected me in a fresh way. As I recount the events, I often note the heavy worry I held at their age, even absent today's online strains. I believed each error held huge consequences because I lacked prior examples. The notion of items entering a lasting file was stressed by caring adults, leaving me convinced I must succeed at every task.

To be direct, some of that worry carried into raising my children. My sons do not require me to model flawless success. They do not need a trimmed account of my years where every issue led straight to a win. They surely do not need one more voice tying value only to accomplishments.

What they appear to value is learning that I have erred, felt awkward, fallen short in major ways, and continued onward. This may stem from the load they already carry to perform without fault. Or it may arise because accounts of failure offer what success tales often miss: space for them to see their own experiences reflected.

In the end, most people have failed an exam, chosen poorly, felt embarrassed, or missed a target. These events connect us all. The true positive close is that life moved forward. That weak score, awkward instant, or missed try does not become the full tale. It forms one section. And at times, years later, it becomes the most amusing one.
