For more than 70 years the Fontainebleau Miami Beach has ranked among America's most recognizable hotels.

Since its 1954 opening the large oceanfront resort has welcomed presidents, celebrities and waves of Miami visitors drawn to its stylish image, curved design and upscale amenities.

On a recent Miami trip I reserved a single night that totaled nearly $900. Ahead of arrival I wondered if the landmark property could match its storied name and steep rate.

After settling into an ocean-view room, relaxing by the pools and using the convenient beach access I discovered that the Fontainebleau supplied the timeless Miami elegance that has kept it popular for decades.

Although a large conference increased foot traffic and the room rate remained high the calm resort atmosphere ultimately made the visit worthwhile.

Here is what it was like to stay at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach.

Before booking I expected a high-end experience. Having visited the Las Vegas Fontainebleau previously I anticipated similar comfort and polish at a matching price.

A king room on a Wednesday in April cost $856.25 after taxes and fees. April sits in peak season when travelers seek mild weather before summer heat and rain arrive.

Over seven decades the hotel has built a reputation as a gathering spot for stars, leaders and wealthy guests including Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, John F. Kennedy, Elvis Presley and Judy Garland.

Architect Morris Lapidus created the curved profile that stands as one of Miami Beach's signature sights and a prime example of MiMo style.

At nearly $900 for one night I questioned whether the hotel's fame would produce a standout stay or whether the cost simply bought the brand name.

Daytime arrival felt like entering an upscale beach club. A gentle sea breeze passed the large double doors and at night lit fountains plus a marble statue added grandeur to the entrance.

The lobby hummed with energy because of a major marketing conference during my visit. Guests rolled designer bags across marble floors, groups filled seating areas and beachgoers moved in from outside.

Unlike some luxury hotels that feel formal the mood here stayed lively yet comfortable. Check-in went smoothly and I received access hours before the 4 p.m. standard time.

Large crystal chandeliers hung from the lobby ceiling and served as reminders of the property's glamorous past.

The elevator area featured polished marble, gold trim and refined details that kept the upscale tone consistent.

Throughout the resort I found additional lounges and dining spots where guests relaxed, socialized or escaped the Florida heat. Nine restaurants range from casual spots like Chez Bon Bon to Prime 54 steakhouse along with poolside and beach service.

I dined off-site at Papi Steak so I skipped the on-site options, yet each venue appeared busy from a distance.

Beyond dining the property offers bars, pools, a gym, spa and retail shops. With 1,504 rooms, nearly two million square feet of space and 22 oceanfront acres the resort felt like a complete vacation destination.

I could easily picture spending an entire weekend on site without venturing elsewhere.

After touring the grounds I went upstairs to check whether the room met expectations. My room sat in the Chateau Tower with direct ocean views.

Hallways remained quiet and well kept, offering a calm contrast to the active lobby below.

The king room included modern furnishings, floor-to-ceiling windows and sweeping sea views. Natural light filled the space while a neutral blue palette created a clean, refined look.

The marble bathroom ranked among the most luxurious parts of the stay and turned the night into something closer to a spa retreat than a quick stop.

Sleek finishes and generous space made the bathroom feel more upscale than those in other hotels at similar rates.

The walk-in shower featured marble walls and quality fixtures, ideal for rinsing off after a day on the sand.

Double sinks provided ample room to prepare for the day or evening and helped the bathroom feel spacious.

Branded toiletries and small touches added a personal Fontainebleau signature. Together these elements created a genuine luxury feel for the price paid.

The room balanced style with practical features suited to both leisure and business travelers.
