When I assisted my daughter with settling into her UCLA dorm last fall, I believed I had covered every base. Move-in costs were planned but ongoing expenses were not

The most meaningful costs did not involve storage solutions or organizers.

Instead they included small treats during difficult periods, an occasional meal delivery after extended practice sessions, and personal notes mailed at her request.

These gestures helped maintain a sense of connection despite the distance of many miles.

Children often demonstrate greater independence than expected

Prior to college I assumed responsibility for resolving every issue. Over the freshman year I learned that listening sometimes served as the primary role.

She reached out frequently, especially during demanding weeks. The tone of her calls often mattered more than the specific details shared. At times she sought only an outlet rather than solutions, allowing her to work through situations independently.

She managed rigorous coursework, a complex living arrangement, performances, band activities, and new relationships. Each obstacle overcome without direct intervention strengthened her self-assurance.

Observing these developments was not always simple, yet they proved essential for her growth.

Parents undergo their own transformation during this period

I anticipated development in my daughter. What surprised me was the extent of my own change. Between arrival and departure my position evolved.

I moved from handling daily details to offering perspective when sought. Her growing independence did not reduce our bond but altered its form.

While packing the final items I recognized that the young woman returning home differed from the one who had left. She displayed increased confidence and resilience. In the process I had adapted as well.
