If you checked my Danish husband's social media, you would never guess he has a child.

There are no regular posts about our 3-year-old son, Aksel, no emotional notes on his progress, and no signs of his daily role at home.

In reality, he is a devoted father. He simply sees no reason to share every detail online.

When I left the US for Denmark eight years ago, this contrast barely registered. Yet after giving birth in Copenhagen, I began to notice how much of my American parenting mindset centered on evidence: showing I was working hard, giving up enough, and achieving the right results.

In Denmark, raising children feels more private and less tied to outside opinions. This does not reduce the depth of care, but it stands apart from the nonstop comparisons that fill my American feeds.

The longer I live here, the clearer it becomes that becoming a better parent has required me to drop habits I never knew I had picked up: the drive to plan, record, and improve every part of my son's day.

Fatherhood follows a different pattern

Before Aksel arrived, I supported equal roles for both parents. Motherhood revealed how quickly those beliefs can fade, especially for women shaped by a culture that often links maternal care to silent endurance (trends like tradwife content on social platforms add to this pressure).

Denmark questioned what I had viewed as standard. Here, fathers receive little extra praise for basic involvement. In many homes, including ours, dads are seen as equal caregivers rather than helpers.

The country's leave policy supports this balance. Since October 2022, time off is split more evenly, with each parent getting a non-transferable share. Across Copenhagen, fathers are commonly seen with strollers during the day, often meeting other dads on leave. This is treated as ordinary family life.

My own background looked different. My mother, a teacher, received two weeks after my birth. My father, who worked at the same school, received none.

Not every Danish household reaches perfect balance. Still, the starting point shifts when fathers are viewed as primary caregivers from day one. In the US, motherhood is often shown as total self-sacrifice, where the parent who gives the most without complaint earns praise.

This was one of the first ideas I needed to set aside.

I stopped trying to perfect every moment

Ideas about childhood also differ. I grew up in Connecticut, where success was expected early. I once told my parents I planned to attend Harvard at age 6. That goal now seems odd, but it fit an environment where competition could start in preschool.

Here, the contrast stands out. Danish preschools focus on play, self-reliance, time outside, and building social skills rather than early testing. This creates space for children to develop before formal evaluation begins.

The shift challenged me. I had not noticed how often my own words about parenting involved terms like enrich, prepare, stimulate, and schedule.

In Denmark, free time is valued, and boredom is not viewed as a shortcoming. Letting go of the belief that a good parent must always provide more took real effort.

I am learning to release control

One of the toughest changes has been quieting the urge to direct every activity or confirm I am doing enough. I now see that some of what I labeled care was actually an attempt to manage outcomes, and some of what I called engagement came from worry.

Time in Denmark has taught me that love can appear as stepping back and allowing a child to explore, feel bored at times, and handle small challenges.

I do not believe Danish parents care more deeply or that the country has fixed every family issue. American parents also face real pressures that encourage constant improvement, such as limited public support and higher costs for care.

Raising Aksel here has made me recognize how much of what I once saw as proper parenting grew from an American worry about falling short.

That habit remains, and it may never fully leave. Yet I spot it sooner and keep it from taking over.

Perhaps the hardest part of good parenting to release was the notion that love must always appear as nonstop work to be real.
