Today, we mark Mother's Day at the cemetery, the sole spot where our entire family unites.

I lack a vivid recollection of my first Mother's Day over 16 years ago. Still, it must have brimmed with tenderness. My husband likely delivered breakfast to our bed. Our five-month-old son William probably nursed there before nodding off again. Perhaps we wandered the neighborhood or crossed the Bay Bridge from Oakland to San Francisco, strolling the Embarcadero amid the Bay Area's spring warmth.

New motherhood pulsed with optimism and possibility. I am certain I cherished how my husband Nick and I had transformed from a couple into a true family.

As Our Family Expanded, Mother's Day Turned into 'Me Time'

My son Kai arrived in 2012, growing our family and ushering in a second round of parenting. Responsibilities multiplied, demanding even more from me as a mother. Soon, Mother's Day shifted into a welcome reprieve. It became my chance to step away, letting my husband handle all the parenting choices, care, and demands of our young children.

As the primary stay-at-home parent, I craved solitude on that day - time distant from my wonderful yet constantly demanding kids. It allowed indulgences like a manicure or a kid-free workout. For a few precious hours, I could imagine a life unburdened by motherhood.

My Son's Death Shattered My Sense of Motherhood

Then, in 2019, William perished in a heartbreaking ski accident, upending everything I knew about being a mother. Despite all the devotion, time, and effort I invested, it could not preserve his life. Shame and failure haunted me - how could my child die under my care? I grappled with the sting of maternal inadequacy.

That inaugural Mother's Day without him, I simply ignored the occasion. Celebrating felt impossible, a cruel mockery for a mother freshly plunged into grief.

Rediscovering Ways to Parent My Lost Son

About six months into mourning, we chose to try for another child, embracing parenting anew. This journey taught me to mother William differently yet deliberately. I needed to - and yearned to - continue nurturing him in spirit.

Gone were the routines of bedtime stories or homework help. Instead, I shared his tales with others, built his legacy through service in his honor, and introduced his baby brother to the brother he never met.

By welcoming new life and sustaining his presence, I carved a path from despair back to light, reaffirming my role as his mother.

The Cemetery: Our Mother's Day Tradition

These days, Mother's Day draws us to the cemetery. There, our family feels most intact. My husband and I bring our living children to sit and commune with William.

This was never the idyllic family portrait we envisioned. Yet, it is our reality, and I have forged coping strategies as a grieving mother - especially for this poignant holiday. Being at his gravesite matters deeply, blending joy and sorrow in one sacred space. It models resilience for my living children, proving we show up even when it's tough and unconventional.

Transforming the Cemetery into a Joyful Gathering Spot

I refuse to let these visits weigh on my kids. We turn them into celebrations. We pack a picnic brunch - coffee, croissants, fresh fruit - and spread a blanket. Frisbees, balls, and games keep everyone playful. My teenager scales the ancient maple tree by William's site, swinging from sturdy limbs. Little Bodhi observes from below, eager for his turn one day.

Our two dogs join the adventure too. We roam the grounds, noting fresh and weathered graves, pondering the lives and narratives interred there. Tiny ones gone before their first birthday. Simple markers for 'Father' or 'Mother.' Countless tales echo our own.

Thus, we bond with William, the son who first made me a mother, while embracing our vibrant living family. I have come to see that we must - and can - hold both loves simultaneously.
