Micro dramas represent an unusual and inexpensive form of soap opera designed for phone screens, and the category continues to expand rapidly.

Imagine short video clips on a mobile device that viewers pay to access. This concept recalls Quibi, the well-known service that failed in 2020.

Yet the same idea now applies to micro dramas, which consist of low-budget productions divided into one-minute segments. Industry estimates suggest consumers could spend up to 14 billion dollars on such content this year.

While the bulk of spending occurs in China where the style first succeeded, micro dramas are also gaining ground in the United States. Established platforms including Peacock have begun incorporating them, and domestic companies such as CandyJar report swift expansion in their operations.

The format may appeal mainly to a niche group, especially women seeking brief romantic stories in the style of Harlequin novels. Even so, this development signals a shift in how certain audiences discover and purchase entertainment.

Ali Albazaz, chief executive of Inkitt, believes the trend will grow substantially. Inkitt started as a site for aspiring authors and now operates CandyJar along with Ironblood, a service focused on action and adventure tales generated partly through artificial intelligence and targeted at male viewers.

Further growth seems plausible, though major platforms like TikTok and Meta Reels could ultimately control the space. These services already drive much of the discovery for apps such as CandyJar, raising the question of whether they will retain the content themselves.

TikTok has begun testing several approaches to micro dramas, including both free ad-supported versions and paid options.

Albazaz notes that competition remains intense, with potential challenges arising from multiple directions. In a recent discussion on the Channels podcast, he outlined the economics and audience details for the format, joined by Hernan Lopez of Owl and Co. for broader industry context.

Peter Kafka asked why micro dramas succeed when free short-form options already exist on Reels and TikTok. Albazaz explained that user-generated platforms rarely offer complete serialized stories, whereas micro dramas deliver full narratives broken into roughly 90-second episodes that can be sold individually or via subscription.

Production budgets for these projects typically range from 150,000 to 300,000 dollars in Los Angeles, with CandyJar often operating at the higher end to achieve stronger visual quality.

Although many micro dramas appear low in production value, the company aims to differentiate itself through higher standards. For Ironblood, AI tools allow creation of action sequences at costs between 10,000 and 50,000 dollars, far below traditional CGI expenses.

Albazaz emphasized transparency about AI use to maintain trust with audiences. Looking ahead, the company seeks to build tools that support storytellers across books, audio, film, and even theme park experiences.
