Every state has its signature traits, whether farmland, storms, or theater scenes. Yet when measuring overall economic power, Massachusetts rises to the top position.

According to a WalletHub report issued this month, Massachusetts holds the strongest economy nationwide. It surpassed all other states along with Washington, DC, while Washington state took second place and Utah came in third.

The leading position stemmed from first place in innovation potential, measured by high-tech and STEM job shares, plus fifth place in economic activity, which considered GDP expansion, fast-growing firms, and exports per person.

Michael Goodman, a public policy professor at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and co-editor of MassBenchmarks, explained to Business Insider that a broad range of advantages distinguishes the state economically.

Massachusetts Leads in Innovation Metrics

WalletHub previously named Massachusetts the top innovative state after Washington, DC. The state shows high per-capita research and development spending along with strong venture capital funding levels.

Goodman noted that although California and New York have larger populations, Massachusetts excels notably in innovation output.

He described the state as highly appealing to creative talent. Moderna, the biotech firm behind a key COVID-19 vaccine, maintains its headquarters in Cambridge as one example.

High-Tech Employment Forms a Major Sector

WalletHub data showed the tech industry contributing over one quarter of state GDP, with Massachusetts holding the largest share of high-tech positions.

The state also leads in the percentage of firms appearing on Deloitte Technology Fast 500, which tracks rapid-growth innovative companies across North America.

Cambridge hosts offices or labs for Microsoft, Google, and Amazon.

Universities Drive Research and Development Efforts

Besides MIT, the state features prominent schools such as Harvard, Northeastern University, Boston University, and Tufts University.

Goodman pointed out that education emphasis begins at the K-12 stage, with major state investments yielding results. Public school spending reached 22 billion dollars in 2024 according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Massachusetts ranked seventh in per-student spending for elementary and secondary levels that year based on Census figures.

Goodman observed that the outcome shows in the state maintaining the highest educational attainment levels.

Economic Gains Come With Ongoing Challenges

Despite innovation benefits, Goodman noted that residents in some areas lack access to the innovation economy and encounter difficulties.

While WalletHub ranked Massachusetts as the best state overall to live in last year, it placed 44th for affordability.

Recent federal actions regarding university grants and international student policies have added uncertainty for institutions like Harvard.

Goodman stated that cost-of-living and inequality issues remain serious concerns, made more difficult by inflation and federal developments.
