Throughout much of my twenties, I pursued a single aim: entering the technology field. I valued my contributions in higher education and supported its goals, yet another drive persisted.

I sought to develop offerings that influenced daily routines and learning experiences. A quicker tempo, tougher tests, and confirmation that an outsider like myself could thrive in a sector famous for barriers drew me in strongly.

Numerous setbacks pushed the goal further away, yet I persisted. I felt certain that securing entry into tech and locating the ideal position would mean remaining there indefinitely.

Finally obtaining the technology position I had targeted brought a sense of validation. Pride, relief, and assurance that prior efforts had paid off filled me.

What remained hidden was my entry into this desired role precisely when my personal circumstances were already unraveling from accumulated strain.

Days involved absorbing details from a fresh sector. Evenings brought tasks and time limits. I repeatedly assured myself that managing everything remained possible.

My physical state told a different story. Hair loss occurred in noticeable amounts. Waking left me drained despite extended rest. A persistent pressure built in my chest during routine moments. I viewed the tension as fleeting, the necessary toll for drive and eventual achievement.

One afternoon, my supervisor requested a meeting. Her voice stayed calm, yet I sensed an announcement. The organization was reorganizing. My position faced uncertainty. She then presented options: take a separation package or continue.

Remaining did not seem viable. By then, denying the months of strain had become impossible. The setting lacked sustainability, and demands exceeded capacity while school continued.

Acknowledging this reality brought both confirmation and distress. It verified the intensity had been real. At the same time, it highlighted the personal costs paid to preserve a version of achievement that no longer helped.

It also raised an issue I had avoided: perhaps the professional route I had chased was not the path required.

Rather than seeking another standard full-time post, I selected independent projects matching my principles. I created a routine that safeguards health rather than undermining it and accepted adaptable arrangements without hesitation.

The layoff from the role I expected to shape my path several years earlier caused pain and instability. Yet it supplied an important opportunity to reconstruct my career around equilibrium, purpose, and genuine satisfaction.

It demonstrated that a professional route does not form a fixed line established once and followed without change. Adjustments can occur repeatedly as new details and refined goals emerge.

The reality offers greater freedom: professional paths develop alongside personal growth.

Shifting direction remains acceptable when a sector that energized at twenty-five depletes resources at thirty. The position once pursued may reveal exactly what to avoid, and abilities gained in one period often serve as useful tools later. None of these represent defeat.

Above all, the event dismantled assumptions held since university: that accomplished individuals identify their direction early and maintain it, that redirection signals defeat, and that altering course suggests unreliability.

My twenties were spent fearing professional adjustments. I now regard them as essential refinements. Every change reveals more about sources of energy, core values, and work that permits full presence.
