Leaders should lead by example

Christopher Nolan served as director yet still completed the same lengthy daily ascent to the filming location alongside the full team.

During a combined People discussion on July 16, Tom Holland noted that Nolan completed the routine climb without exception, even when a helicopter option existed.

Nolan mentioned he had explored the alternative, yet his spouse and fellow producer Emma Thomas rejected the notion.

"I attempted it, but Emma refused to allow it. She insisted, 'You must make the climb. If you expect others to do so, you must join them,'" Nolan explained.

Carry your own weight

Matt Damon, portraying the lead Greek figure Odysseus, described a significant oversight on the opening day of filming in Greece.

In a Today conversation on July 14, Damon recounted reaching the location ahead of fellow performers following the extended walk.

"Cast members began arriving, each in full armor. Then I noticed Corey, my wardrobe handler, transporting my armor, and I felt terrible," Damon stated.

Recognizing the error, Damon promptly expressed regret to his wardrobe assistant and the broader group.

"That situation did not repeat. It proved quite awkward," Damon added.

One person's attitude can shape the entire team culture

Matt Damon observed that Jon Bernthal motivated the group through a demanding sequence early in the schedule.

Damon described Bernthal positioned partially in frigid water in Morocco amid winter conditions while shooting inside the Trojan Horse.

"Jon was trembling and clasping his hands to control the shaking enough to deliver a single line," Damon shared with People in remarks published the prior Thursday.

Christopher Nolan checked on Bernthal multiple times, yet the performer encouraged continuation. "Jon simply said, 'Keep going, keep going,'" Damon recalled.

"That established the standard for the cast. The takeaway was that eventually you may find yourself in the water, yet you will not voice complaints. You will exert maximum effort," Damon noted.

In a separate July discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, Damon called Bernthal "the initial model of someone exceeding perceived limits."

"No one inside that horse would complain across the following five months after witnessing that example," Damon said.
