First she was Brat, now she is embracing Pilates routines.

"You know what I've been doing though recently is Pilates," former vice president Kamala Harris shared with actor Keke Palmer during an episode of the "Baby, This is Keke Palmer" podcast that aired on October 15.

Harris described how Pilates would fit into her ideal Sunday alongside a stroll with husband Doug Emhoff, time for cooking, and a family meal. At age 61 with no biological children, she has helped raise Emhoff's kids Cole, 32, and Ella, 27, from his prior marriage.

She noted that Pilates provides an overall sense of well-being and boosts her feeling of empowerment in everyday activities.

"There's so much about empowerment that is about knowing your strength and recognizing it," she explained. The practice, which focuses on the mind-body link, helps her tune into her physical power more deeply.

"I'm just realizing that there are all of these muscles and areas that I have not been exercising," Harris added.

Once favored mainly by dancers, models, and stars, Pilates now ranks as the top booked class on ClassPass worldwide last year, with a 66 percent rise in reservations over 2024 and surpassing both weight training and running. Upscale hotels such as certain Ritz-Carlton and St Regis properties have added reformer studios as a premium feature.

Harris joins other fans like Jennifer Aniston, Miley Cyrus, and Hailey Bieber who have praised the method.

The growing interest in healthy aging may also drive some of the surge in Pilates participation.

This gentle approach to building strength and flexibility relies on slow, exact motions that target the core and stabilizing muscles around the joints. It supports better everyday function, alignment, and steadiness, all key for staying active and self-reliant later in life. Research from a 2021 review in Physiotherapy showed that among 1,650 adults aged 60 and up, regular Pilates lowered fall risks, which can lead to fractures, reduced movement, and muscle decline.

Harris mentioned to Palmer, who earned her Pilates teaching certification this year, that she favors reformer sessions on the sliding platform with spring resistance over floor-based mat work.

She did not specify her weekly frequency, yet her enthusiasm suggests she may soon qualify as a full Pilates enthusiast.
