Israeli startup Plantopia, developer of a novel platform for high-quality proteins via advanced biomolecular agriculture, has closed a $9 million round led by US dairy leader Schreiber Foods along with Siddhi Capital and Israeli backers Yotvata, Arkin Capital and the foodtech incubator Fresh Start. The capital advances the firm toward industrial-scale output and lifts total funding past $16 million.

Founded by Prof. Alexander Vainstein, Tal Lutzky and Amir Tiroler, Plantopia draws on biotechnology from the Hebrew University Faculty of Agriculture to generate complex animal proteins inside plants. The company now produces all milk proteins identical to dairy versions yet lactose-free, plant-derived and priced competitively. The process yields oxygen instead of carbon dioxide or methane, making it fully sustainable. Plantopia remains the sole firm worldwide to manufacture complete casein containing all four subunits (αs1, αs2, β, κ).

Roughly 12 percent of Americans currently use weight-management drugs, prompting doctors to urge higher protein intake to offset potential muscle loss of 25-40 percent. Whey remains the benchmark for its full amino-acid profile and fast uptake. Seventy percent of US consumers now aim to increase protein consumption, up from 59 percent four years ago, driving food makers to add milk proteins to cereals, beverages and fast-food items.

Established in 2018 in Kiryat Shmona after eight years of research, Plantopia will deploy its technology this year inside a new facility already under construction at Kibbutz Sdot Yam. The approach offers a green substitute for dairy farms, the only prior source of milk proteins and especially casein, a North American market valued at $50 billion yearly.

Unlike fermentation methods that demand heavy equipment outlays, generate CO2 and incur high costs, Plantopia relies on indoor vertical farming of sprouts. The system produces oxygen, needs no light or special conditions, avoids cattle feed or vast land areas and scales readily to demand while preserving protein and cheese quality at low cost.
