My spouse and I launched Gracie's Corner because we needed to. During the pandemic we both taught at universities and used every tool available to entertain our three children.

YouTube was one option, yet few figures resembled our own kids. In a varied society it matters that all children see themselves reflected.

I teamed up with our daughter Graceyn, now 13, to produce an entertaining educational program featuring Black characters.

My wife's practice supported the early costs

Progress was gradual at first. During year one we focused on basics. I composed tunes for Graceyn to perform, and we captured them inside a home closet. Our clips drew roughly 100 views each.

Arlene still taught and maintained her psychology practice. She added clients to cover production expenses, and we also used savings. We hoped the videos would eventually cover their own costs.

Profit was never the main goal; the project came from passion. Even so, I wanted to avoid pouring funds into an endless pit.

A viral hit prompted my exit from academia

In the second year, during 2022, one video spread widely and growth accelerated. That spring I stepped down from my tenured role to focus fully on Gracie's Corner. Arlene filmed my final walk from the office, marking a major shift. I had pictured retiring from university life after steady advancement.

Quitting the security of tenure felt challenging, yet the sense of purpose eased the choice. Classroom teaching reached only a small group, while Gracie's Corner could reach families worldwide.

Creativity mixes with growing business demands

The creative work flows naturally. I write the songs, and a team of animators now brings them to the screen. We record with Graceyn every other week so she maintains balance with school and daily life.

Business tasks take more time. I spend most days meeting partners and supervising the new recording studio and office space under construction.

Our aim is to pass the company to our children

Academic salaries rarely build large wealth. After leaving those posts we now feel secure and have reinvested heavily to expand the company.

Seeing our material in family living rooms counts as success. A highlight came with our first NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Animated Series in 2023, alongside Disney and other major names. That felt like arrival.

We envision Gracie's Corner as a modern Sesame Street. Fifty years from now we want a global brand that our children can inherit. Beyond the show itself, we hope our story inspires others: the family that built an animation empire from humble beginnings.
