Energy costs spiked after the latest Middle East flare-up. Consumer prices for petrol and diesel climbed sharply in various European nations on average.

Household electricity prices bucked the trend, however, with natural gas prices experiencing smaller upticks by comparison.

"The persistent geopolitical strain in the Middle East amounts to a fuel supply disruption. Thus, the effect on Europe's gas supply - and retail gas costs - hits harder than on electricity markets," said Ioannis Korras, a senior energy market analyst at VaasaETT, in an interview with Euronews Business.

What shifts occurred in household energy prices following the US-Israel strike on Iran in late February and Iran's retaliatory actions? Which European capitals faced the steepest rises in household electricity and gas prices?

Data from the Household Energy Price Index (HEPI), produced by Energie-Control Austria, MEKH and VaasaETT, shows residential electricity prices for end-users dropped 3.1% on average in EU capitals from 2 February 2026 to 1 April 2026.

Prices dipped from 26.13€ cents per kWh to 25.31 c€/kWh during that time.

Tallinn, Estonia's capital, posted the biggest drop at 19%, with Copenhagen (15.9%), Stockholm (15.2%) and Ljubljana (15%) close behind.

Helsinki (11.9%), Riga (11.6%) and Madrid (10.9%) also registered falls exceeding 10%.

Spring marks a shift to higher renewable output and steady demand after winter heating and before summer air-conditioning surges, Korras explained.

"This pattern lets regions like the Nordics and Iberia enjoy lower prices, showing some separation from fuel-based pressures," he added.

In places like Spain, the UK and Cyprus, state measures such as cuts to energy taxes or VAT cushioned households from the worst effects.

Rome had the sharpest rise at 7.9%, with Dublin (5.7%), Lisbon (5.4%) and Athens (3.3%) surpassing 3%.

Several other EU capitals saw household electricity prices hold steady or shift minimally.

Markets relying more on gas-fired power - especially where gas often determines the marginal price, like Italy, Ireland and Greece - face bigger wholesale electricity hikes that flow through to consumer bills, Korras pointed out.

Shifts in Gas Prices

Gas prices for residential end-users climbed 6.8% across EU capitals in this timeframe, moving from 10.67 c€/kWh to 11.40 c€/kWh.

Aside from isolated exceptions, gas prices rose markedly for households. Brussels (28.8%), Berlin (28.6%) and Athens (21.3%) saw jumps over 20%.

Vienna (16.9%), Amsterdam (14.8%) and Rome (10.9%) topped 10%.

Notable gains above the EU average also hit Bucharest (8.9%), Riga (8.7%), London (8.6%), Paris (7.9%) and Tallinn (7.2%).

Madrid bucked the trend with the largest drop at 7.9%, trailed by Ljubljana (4%) and Warsaw (3.5%).

"The split between electricity and gas trends in April reveals a clear 'structural decoupling' in European markets, fueled by varying fuel blends and policy actions," Korras observed.

"Gas prices reflected global supply limits and geopolitical risks, whereas electricity responded more to regional production patterns and regulations."

Which Households Face the Highest Energy Bills Post-Iran Crisis?

By early April, household electricity rates differed sharply across EU capitals. Bern (c€39.1), Brussels (c€39), Dublin (c€38.5), Berlin (c€38.4), Prague (c€36.3) and London (c€35.8) charged the highest rates per kWh.

The EU capitals' average is c€25.3. Kyiv (c€8.5), Budapest (c€9.6), Podgorica (c€11.3) and Belgrade (c€11.6) provided the lowest household electricity costs.

Paris stood at c€27.2, Madrid at c€21.9.

Gas price gaps were equally wide across capitals, spanning c€1.6 in Kyiv to c€35.8 in Stockholm, against an EU average of c€11.4.

Amsterdam (c€20.3), Bern (c€15.7), Vienna (c€15.1), Rome (c€14.9) and Lisbon (c€14.1) ranked after Stockholm.

After Kyiv, Budapest (c€2.7), Belgrade (c€4.6) and Zagreb (c€4.6) had the lowest gas rates for locals.

Besides Rome, Paris (c€13.8) and Berlin (c€13.2) exceeded the EU average, while London (c€8.7) and Madrid (c€8.6) fell short.

Taxes and distribution fees differ greatly by nation, with governments adjusting them as needed.
