NEW YORK -- Even if you prefer to tune out the excitement surrounding SpaceX, Elon Musk and initial public offerings, your retirement savings likely cannot.

SpaceX now carries a $2.1 trillion valuation following a 19.2 percent gain on its first day of trading. Regardless of whether the figure exceeds the combined worth of Exxon Mobil, Bank of America and Coca-Cola, the broader market has accepted it. Should the valuation hold, SpaceX will qualify for several prominent stock indexes.

These benchmarks focus on market representation rather than growth forecasts or leadership details. Once SpaceX meets size requirements, inclusion will follow within weeks or months.

The development matters because retirement savers increasingly rely on low-cost funds that replicate indexes. These vehicles have delivered stronger results than stock-picking strategies, with just 21 percent of actively managed U.S. equity funds surviving and outperforming their benchmark peers over the past decade, per Morningstar figures through 2025. As a result, assets in index funds surpassed those in active funds starting in 2024 and the difference continues to widen.

Indexes exist to answer a simple question: how is the market performing? Thousands of stocks move simultaneously, making a quick summary otherwise difficult.

The S&P 500 remains the most widely followed benchmark, covering 500 large U.S. companies and guiding trillions of dollars either through direct replication or performance comparisons.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, established in the 1800s, receives less attention on Wall Street because it follows only 30 large stocks.

Index membership can lift share prices once announcements come from providers such as S&P Dow Jones Indices, Nasdaq or FTSE Russell.

More than 1,000 index funds existed at the close of last year, according to the Investment Company Institute, including 185 that track the S&P 500.

Nasdaq recently adjusted its criteria to admit certain large companies after only 15 trading days instead of waiting for its annual December update of the Nasdaq 100.

The Invesco QQQ exchange-traded fund, which follows the Nasdaq 100 and holds roughly $477 billion, could therefore add SpaceX shares automatically for its investors.

Anthropic and OpenAI are also preparing U.S. listings that could value each firm near $1 trillion.

These companies reached substantial scale through private capital from pension plans, corporations and wealthy individuals before entering public markets.

The shift has prompted index providers to reconsider how rapidly they add newly public mega-cap firms.

S&P Dow Jones Indices has kept its existing standards, requiring at least 12 months of trading on an eligible exchange plus profitability in the latest quarter and over the prior four quarters combined.

SpaceX reported a $4.9 billion loss last year and an additional $4.3 billion loss in the first quarter of 2026, while noting it may never reach profitability. Long-term share prices generally align with earnings trends.

Pension officials representing firefighters, teachers and other public workers in California and New York recently wrote to SpaceX criticizing its governance structure, particularly the voting power granted to Musk through a special share class.

They noted that index-fund ownership could make their plans indirect holders of SpaceX stock.

Concentrated voting control would render Musk effectively impossible to remove without his approval, according to the letter signed by the California Public Employees Retirement System chief, the New York state comptroller and the New York City comptroller.

Index funds purchase every constituent regardless of governance concerns.

Tesla has stayed in the S&P 500 despite long-standing valuation critiques and has grown into one of the ten largest U.S. companies by market value.

Certain indexes apply governance or environmental screens, though investors must identify those options themselves.

The S&P 500 ESG index, for instance, removed Tesla in 2022.
