During my second year at Central Connecticut State University I began thinking about changing schools. The academics were fine, yet I wanted a different social scene.

A high school friend invited me to join her at the larger University of Connecticut and share an off-campus apartment. After checking that my credits would move with me, I decided to go.

The new campus looked appealing at first, but the experience fell short of my expectations.

Transfer rules limited my progress

I had started at CCSU as a psychology major and enjoyed the classes. UConn sat only forty-five minutes away, so most credits should have carried over without issue.

By sophomore year I had already finished several upper-level courses. The schools treated those classes as equal, yet a cap on transferable credits meant I would need to retake several of them.

The discovery was unsettling because I was already tracking my growing student debt. Repeating semesters would have added significant cost.

With guidance from an advisor I switched into general-education courses for the rest of the term so those credits would travel back with me.

Returning felt like the right step

I viewed the time at UConn as a short trial period. Although I made lasting friends and earned induction into an honors society, the semester confirmed that the larger school was not the best fit.

Back at CCSU I transferred the general-education credits and completed one missing course over the summer. My graduation timeline stayed intact.

Smaller classes, familiar professors, and known classmates helped me feel settled again. The short distance between campuses also let me keep in touch with new friends from UConn.

Some choices can be adjusted

The experience taught me that plans can change without lasting harm. College requires a large investment, so following instincts matters.

I could have stayed and repeated the needed classes, yet I recognized that CCSU suited me better. Today I remain proud of my original school while still cheering for UConn teams.

Reversing a decision is rarely easy, but it can be the healthiest option available.
