Twelve months ago, I walked away from my position to journey alongside my father. Both of us had skipped holidays for a long time. He lived by himself after becoming a widower, while I had focused on reporting for a quarter century.

We had talked about such a trip following my mother's sudden passing from illness on Christmas 2021.

My father hoped to meet her relatives abroad to express gratitude and farewell face to face. His mobility had declined, so we decided to go as a pair. It would also allow me to travel free from constant work notifications.

Dad had dropped considerable weight

I drove up from Los Angeles to San Francisco to connect with my father and outline our coming year of trips. Right away I saw a problem. He appeared much thinner than during my last visit months earlier. He mentioned food poisoning from a poor meal weeks back.

"Food poisoning does not drag on for weeks," I noted.

Worried, I brought him to urgent care the next morning. Under the clinic lights, his yellowed skin stood out clearly. Even the area around his eyes showed the tint.

He entered the facility right away for exams and monitoring. Having faced similar steps with my mom years earlier, he told me to return home. The fresh bags I had purchased for our plans sat at his entrance when I arrived.

He never entered that home again. Pancreatic cancer took him at the facility ten days afterward.

We missed the chance to build new moments

Official records took the place of travel documents. Rather than forming fresh experiences with dad, I worked hard to preserve the memories already made.

The period after proved heavy. My mind shifted from leisure plans to handling family duties. Along with reaching out to his circle of friends and relatives, banks and policy providers required notice of his death. His cherished plants also needed care, though I reside in a space without greenery and lack skill in that area, plus a fridge full of items I hoped not to discard.

Being without a role at that point brought both upsides and downsides. I avoided any need to hurry back to Los Angeles duties and could remain in San Francisco as long as needed to close matters. Yet the lack of work left extra daily hours for sorrow and thoughts on what might have gone differently. Much remained to handle, along with time for reflection.

A full year has gone by, and I now feel prepared to reenter the job market.

I aim to channel my drive back into my profession

One factor is money. Though I had set aside funds for time off and received some assets, unexpected costs arose, such as the remaining home loan.

I also seek solid workplace medical coverage. After both parents faced advanced illness, my own well-being now ranks high. I currently cover extended benefits myself, and those rates rose sharply earlier this year.

Then there is emotional balance. Sorrow runs deep with no fixed schedule, and tough days still occur a year on. I cared deeply for my parents and continue to do so. Yet after mostly wrapping up his matters, such as preparing the house for transfer, I feel ready to shift that focus toward work.

I tried the waters again in March, fittingly during the first trip I managed to complete. I headed to Milan for the Winter Games. I had reported on several events for different outlets but never attended one live. My reporting path began 25 years back as a skating researcher at a major network, and I posted updates on key athletes. I ended up as a leading voice there, drawing millions of views over two weeks.

Following months of sorrow, happiness returned. I connected with others and created content, activities absent since my father's passing. As an adult I have valued being a strong child and strong reporter. With only the second role left, that is where I choose to direct my energy.
