One trip focused mainly on reaching the destination. The other turned the ride itself into the highlight. These were two overnight rail adventures taken three years apart.

In autumn 2023, an 11-hour private cabin ride on a European sleeper from Venice to Vienna cost $200. Later, in winter 2026, a 53-hour Amtrak bedroom journey from Chicago to Emeryville, California, came to $2,200.

Although both provided solo private space, the two trips felt entirely distinct.

First, an 11-hour Nightjet train carried me from Venice to Vienna.

During November 2023, the journey used an OBB Nightjet service, which runs overnight routes connecting 25 countries from France through the Netherlands.

Next came a 53-hour Amtrak ride spanning Chicago to California.

This covered the complete California Zephyr route, America's longest passenger rail trip. The scenic path crosses seven states aboard a double-decker Superliner train during a three-day, two-night schedule.

The Nightjet option provided a 30-square-foot private cabin with three bunks for $200.

The booking secured a sleeper compartment featuring an in-room sink and vanity, with capacity for three via stacked bunks. This mid-level choice delivered greater privacy than shared bunks or standard seats, though it lacked the full private bath found in higher tiers.

The space allowed comfortable movement for one traveler, yet would likely feel tight with three occupants.

The Amtrak bedroom offered 50 square feet with two bunks and a full bathroom for $2,200.

Amtrak provided coach seats, compact roomettes for two, larger bedrooms with en-suite facilities, and family rooms. The selected bedroom doubled the size of a roomette and included private bath access. Traveling alone highlighted the extra room, especially welcome on a trip nearly five times longer.

Both cabins included wash basins and vanities with storage for toiletries.

On the Nightjet, the sink and vanity sat behind double doors opposite the lower bunk, with one door containing shelves. The Amtrak setup placed similar fixtures across from the lower bunk but left them open, with a nearby cabinet for small items. Bright lighting on both mirrors allowed teeth brushing without exiting the room.

A private bathroom came only with the Amtrak bedroom.

Shared facilities existed on both trains within the sleeper sections. The Amtrak private toilet and shower proved valuable over three days, even in a compact layout. The Nightjet offers some cabins with private baths, yet none were open during booking. Given the short 11-hour duration, the absence felt minor, and shared options sufficed.

Only the Amtrak bedroom featured a daytime configuration.

It included a seat, foldout table, pullout couch, and ceiling-mounted upper bunk. This allowed varied use throughout the extended ride, creating separate living and sleeping zones. Newer Nightjet models now add tables and wall cushions, though the earlier version lacked them.

Amtrak beds proved more comfortable overall.

Both sets of bunks offered solid rest, but Amtrak versions felt thicker and plusher. Nightjet blankets included a thicker comforter, which was preferred. Newer Nightjet bunks measure about four inches longer. Sound sleep occurred on each journey.

The Nightjet ticket covered a simple breakfast.

Shortly before arrival in Vienna, an attendant delivered a tray with two hard rolls, butter, jelly, Nutella, strawberry yogurt, and hot coffee, providing a satisfying start to the day.

The Amtrak fare included six meals.

All meals came with the ticket, served in the dining car with options ranging from French toast to steak. The quality exceeded expectations for onboard preparation.

Communal areas existed solely on the Amtrak train.

Dining and lounge cars facilitated passenger interactions and broke up the long days amid scenic western landscapes. A vacation-like atmosphere prevailed among riders. Such cars typically appear only on extended Amtrak routes. The Nightjet emphasizes efficient overnight city-to-city travel without lounge spaces, which aligned with its rest-focused purpose.

Both rides justified their costs through the experiences offered, and each would be booked again.

The $200 Nightjet cabin delivered fair value for an 11-hour private space that enabled sleep from Italy into Austria. The $2,200 Amtrak journey provided a comfortable adventure, combining reliable transport with nonstop views from a moving hotel-like setting.
