When I first encountered Tyler during our college years I assumed he would remain simply another student. We appeared to be complete opposites in nearly every way.

He focused on environmental science while I thrived in communications classes. He preferred staying close to our native Maine while I dreamed of heading to New York City to chase opportunities in writing.

Our relationship began in 2018 and by 2023 the urge to depart Maine had grown intense.

I spent weeks gathering the nerve to explain that I planned to leave whether he joined me or not. I feared losing him yet also refused to abandon my goals.

His response surprised me with full support. He told me I needed to leave Maine and promised to assist however he could.

Departing Maine appeared to mark a major career shift

Freelance writing had occupied my time since 2020 and by 2023 several prominent outlets had published my pieces. Colleagues often advised relocating nearer to New York to unlock additional reporting prospects.

Many positions I had saved over time were located in New York yet working remotely from Maine made interviews unlikely.

Tyler urged me to submit applications regardless. When an offer arrived for a full time reporting role the moment ranked among the best of my life. I could finally earn a living through writing and achieve my goal of leaving Maine behind.

We became engaged shortly afterward which brought further joy yet introduced a complication. My new position required moving to the New York region while Tyler showed no interest in following.

He already held steady employment in Maine and the expense plus pace of city life held no appeal. Our engagement began with me living seven hours away as we tried to demonstrate to others that distance would not defeat us.

Our long distance arrangement lasted roughly two years

Once settled near my workplace we spoke by video or phone each evening. Strong communication and trust helped deepen our bond during this period.

We had hoped to alternate visits every other weekend with him driving or me traveling by plane train or bus.

Reality proved less predictable. Weather conflicts busy schedules and tight budgets reduced visits until we managed only a single day together every three months.

By then we were married and though my career brought satisfaction the separation began to take a toll. Missing meals and restless nights became common as we questioned whether we would ever share a home.

Eventually the wish to build a future and family together outweighed any single job. I resigned and returned to Maine so we could plan a life side by side.

We chose Charlotte as our mutual fresh start

Extended talks revealed our shared wish to explore a new region and leave New England behind.

A visit to friends in North Carolina introduced us to Charlotte which felt like an ideal balance.

The growing food culture and active downtown echoed New York while nearby shores and outdoor spots recalled Maine. Annual festivals also sparked ideas about raising children and enjoying community events together.

We settled there in 2025. Tyler secured work nearby while I resumed freelance writing and social media projects.

Although full time reporting is missed the freedom to set my own hours and collaborate remotely brings its own rewards.

No decision brings regret yet New York still calls to me on certain days. Questions linger about alternate paths and whether happiness or our marriage would have endured differently.

Those answers remain unknown but I rest assured that marriage to my partner feels right Charlotte grows more familiar each season and New York stays available for future visits.
