I stood in the security queue at San Francisco International Airport when sudden doubt gripped me tightly.

At 50 years old I had resigned from my role as a hospital pharmacist, condensed my belongings into two suitcases, and headed toward Ajijic, Mexico, where I knew no one at all.

For months beforehand I had felt eager to retire abroad early and focus on writing, a passion I had held since childhood.

Yet while waiting in that line one alarming question looped through my mind: Was this the worst decision I could make?

Before the relocation my profession formed a major portion of my existence. I had devoted years to publishing research papers, presenting at global conferences, and earning several pharmacy specialty credentials.

As I strolled the cobblestone lanes of Ajijic amid surrounding Spanish dialogue I sensed disconnection.

I needed to recall that I had left the job because it no longer matched the existence I desired. Still months passed before I released my former life and shaped a fresh identity.

One afternoon I prepared breakfast at noon in the kitchen unsure of the next step. I recalled my prior work routine of ICU rounds, medication oversight, and progress reports. My schedule had carried clear intent then.

Now every day merged into the following one.

I attempted to restore my previous schedule yet no hot yoga studio existed nearby. Even buying groceries differed here requiring visits to multiple small specialty stores instead of a single large market.

I used to reach work early to write before shifts began jotting ideas in checkout lines and waiting areas. Now unlimited time existed yet whenever I tried to write my ideas scattered.

Eventually I understood the cause of feeling adrift: I missed not a location but structure. I resolved to build it independently.

I scheduled deadlines for writing contests and essay entries. I launched a new novel reconnected with beta readers from the previous one and committed to sharing fresh chapters for accountability.

I took up hiking in nearby mountains and joined a boxing gym for fitness. I also volunteered remotely with my university pharmacy school to assess students clinical skills recordings.

Slowly my days formed a consistent pattern of creativity and direction.

Existence in Ajijic proceeds slowly. Small shops shut for midday rest. The word tomorrow might signify next week. Once a repairman promised arrival at 9 a.m. to service my water heater yet appeared at 2 p.m. grinning as though punctual.

Discussions extend here. Locals pause for conversation instead of hurrying through purchases. After treating timeliness as respect and productivity as a strength I initially found this relaxed approach irritating.

Over time the town mellowed me. I learned to inhale deeply to chuckle when arrangements collapsed and to endure lengthy queues calmly.

Now when I return to San Francisco the sudden honking and rushed tempo feel disruptive. Ajijic has altered me internally one unhurried moment after another.

Step by step through writing fresh connections and interest in Mexican traditions a renewed life began to form.

In the end redefining success brought me calm during early retirement

For years I viewed success as residing on a resume through positions achievements and earnings. When all vanished I had to reassess what success signified in retirement.

Across the last three years I uncovered a fresh form of success encompassing well-being tranquility and invention. For me success now reflects harmony between my daily actions and core values rather than a gauge of value.

Amid rooster calls and beautiful sunsets over Lake Chapala I spend time on pursuits that sustain me. Since arriving I have completed several novels and shared essays about my new chapter in Mexico.

My inventive drive also led to stage acting and improv where I perform for audiences and rediscover the pleasure of eliciting laughter.

Early retirement abroad does not involve lounging and observing passing clouds. It represents a path of renewal letting go of outdated success notions and chasing what holds real importance.

I now see that confusion and disorientation form part of renewal and often mark the start of transformation.

Three years earlier while in that airport security line I believed I had discarded an ideal life. Today I recognize I was moving toward another version of success.
