My grandmother performed regularly on the piano yet my mother showed little interest in the instrument and never arranged lessons for her children either. Determined to reverse that pattern I enrolled my own kids in lessons despite their initial reluctance.

Unexpectedly my oldest child developed a true passion for playing. Inspired by that enthusiasm I registered for classes as well. This autumn marks my tenth term studying piano through the adult program at our nearby university music department.

During this time I have mastered basic notation and chord progressions. With two children at home free moments are scarce so simply approaching the piano requires effort. Once my hands touch the keys however the intense attention needed to produce each note blocks out every distraction.

After a lesson I consistently feel more at ease. The forty five minutes spent without glancing at messages or planning the next task allow tension to fade. The same sense of relief appears during home practice provided I silence my phone first.

Overcoming challenges builds lasting bravery

Beginning any new skill feels intimidating yet repeated attempts despite setbacks have steadily increased my willingness to try again. While successful performances bring satisfaction the real thrill comes from persisting through difficult moments at the bench.

I may never attempt extreme physical feats but completing a recital while my pulse races serves as a safe reminder of being fully alive. At my most recent performance my hands trembled noticeably yet I continued and delivered the music with expression.

Afterward the adult students gathered to celebrate. We highlighted strengths rather than errors and accepted praise without self criticism. Studying music later in life centers on personal growth not comparison and that perspective is one I share with my children.
