After finishing university, questions about my plans came often. I pictured myself heading to London to build a career and put down roots. Several friends had already made that move, and I assumed I would follow.

I stayed with my parents while figuring out my next steps. Even though my British hometown was fairly large, isolation weighed on me. Opportunities seemed absent, and my healthcare administration role offered little sense of purpose.

Then my mother shared a job posting for Lundy, an island roughly three miles long in the Bristol Channel. A family visit years earlier had left me fond of its scenery, stories, and wildlife.

I applied at once. Within weeks I resigned, packed my belongings, and boarded a ferry to Lundy, leaving mainland routines behind.

On Lundy I met my partner, who was volunteering. He had experience on other remote islands including Skokholm and Fair Isle, and he shared stories that sparked my interest.

A wider world of isolated islands opened up, and I wanted to explore it. When he accepted a position on Fair Isle, I followed, securing work as a housekeeper at the island's Bird Observatory.

One and a half years after graduation, I arrived on the UK's most remote inhabited island.

Community connections run deeper here than they ever did at home

Fair Isle can be reached only by boat or plane. Poor weather canceled my flight, so the ferry crossing from Shetland brought rising anticipation mixed with nerves.

I knew little beyond the population staying below 60 and the distance to the nearest city reaching about 300 miles.

Upon arrival, the immediate warmth stood out. Smiles, greetings, and introductions came right away.

This openness proved typical. When the ferry docks, residents gather at the harbor to unload supplies, lending a hand regardless of personal need.

While driving, locals wave and smile. I now catch myself before offering the same gesture back home, where such friendliness is rarer.

Residents generously share island knowledge and history. One taught me traditional Fair Isle knitting techniques, and I joined the community Hill Caa to herd and shear sheep, an experience I never expected.

The sense of belonging I missed before has appeared, and my social life has grown. The Bird Observatory bar serves as the gathering spot for music evenings, gatherings, knitting sessions, and similar events.

Most nights find me there with tea, talking with coworkers and visitors while watching the sun set over the water.

Island routines took time to accept, yet I now enjoy them

Time on Lundy had prepared me somewhat, but Fair Isle's isolation still felt striking.

Fog or strong winds can halt planes and boats, leaving no exit. Weather shifts rapidly, turning sunshine to storms and altering plans without notice.

At first the uncertainty felt difficult. Next-day deliveries and instant access were normal before; here mail often lags and travelers may be delayed.

Comfort with the changes has grown. Late supplies rarely cause real problems. Fresh fruit or milk may run low, yet alternatives always exist.

The Bird Observatory chef uses resources wisely, avoiding waste. A pantry stockpile covers periods without boat arrivals, and leftovers are never discarded.

Happiness has returned in ways I had not felt for years

Housekeeping on a remote island after university was never part of my vision, yet the outcome feels right.

Accommodations, meals, and utilities are covered, allowing savings. Daily access to striking landscapes lifts my mood.

Wildlife enthusiasts surround me. Whale pods pass close to shore, and rushing uphill for a nearer view creates unforgettable moments.

Life here holds surprises, and some mainland conveniences are missed, but the experiences, chances, and people far exceed any drawbacks.
