After watching my father's health slip for years, my three brothers and I urged our mother to explore nursing homes or in-home aides.

The nonstop care was wearing her down. She is 13 years older than him and a cancer survivor with health issues of her own. In our Greek community I have seen other women resist outside help because it feels too painful. We did what we could to back her until everything changed about a year ago.

Dad's condition worsened quickly

Last summer my children and I headed south to visit. Mom had called ahead to say Dad was not doing well. I had heard that line before, so I expected the usual trouble with walking or standing.

The reality was worse. He looked frail and showed no interest in food. For a Greek family that is unusual. He could not manage anything alone. At one point my 13-year-old son had to help my brother lift Dad from the floor. It felt like the end. As the youngest I phoned his doctor to ask about home hospice.

I reached the local hospice provider and they arrived the same evening. The nurse stayed for hours to complete intake. Mom, the nurse, and I sat at the table answering questions about Dad's daily life. What began as a heavy moment ended with a sense of calm. I learned that seeing a loved one decline can feel frightening yet also gentle and meaningful. Putting that idea into practice took time.

Dad had always been strong-willed. When he grew weaker my brothers and I tried to encourage him. On the first visit the hospice nurse showed us another way. She suggested we focus on comfort instead of pushing. A kind aide arrived the next day and noticed Dad looked uneasy in the chair. She helped move him to the couch. I felt humbled and realized the goal was to honor his wishes in those final days. If he wanted pudding for breakfast or a small beer with his sons, that was fine.

I had pictured staff taking over the house, yet that was not the case. A nurse visited twice a week to check vitals and track his overall state. Those stops lasted about 30 minutes. On two other days an aide came to help with bathing, easing the round-the-clock duties on Mom.

Dad surprised us by living longer than expected. Last Fourth of July I thought he had only days left. He showed classic signs such as picking at blankets and reaching into the air. His appetite faded further. Yet he held on another nine months.

Our nurse showed lasting kindness

In the end Dad passed quickly. During his final days the team confirmed he was nearing death. In his last hour we called the main nurse for support. Even though it was not her shift she arrived at 9:30 p.m. Her gentle manner stayed with me.

Whenever we thanked her she replied that it had been an honor to care for our father and our family. We could tell she meant it. In the weeks after she sent texts to check on us and attended the visitation, where she wept at his casket. Calling hospice nurses angels falls short.
