Driving vacations in the 1960s and 1970s were common and budget friendly. For many households these long journeys marked the first chance to see life beyond their local communities.

Countless Americans recall these drives from childhood, and the memories still bring people together today, even as rising fuel costs may limit such trips this season.

By the start of the 1960s, Americans saw how straightforward and affordable long distance drives could be.

While flights offered extra comfort, most families chose the car because it cost less to see new parts of the nation. Each summer they loaded station wagons and set out.

Thanks to postwar growth, middle class households enjoyed fresh spending power.

The baby boom meant larger families eager to explore in their latest vehicles. Historian Allen Pietrobon noted that railroads had declined sharply, so driving became the practical choice for most trips.

With extra cash and a growing auto sector, more Americans took to the highways.

Trips were not always trouble free. Author Richard Ratay recalled that breakdowns were expected rather than rare. His father stocked up on repair supplies at the start of every journey, and Ratay still remembers watching his brother try to fix the car with a coat hanger.

The new interstate system offered wide open roads with lighter traffic than today.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower backed the project so the military could cross the country quickly. Launched in 1956 after Congress approved the Federal Aid Highway Act, the network also served as an escape route from cities in case of attack. Construction lasted more than thirty years and cost over one hundred billion dollars, finishing mostly by the 1990s.

When families sought ideas for destinations, car makers and cities teamed up on ads to draw visitors.

The partnership helped both sides. Automakers urged people to drive their new cars to charming towns, boosting sales and tourism at the same time. Ads for oddities like the World's Only Corn Palace in South Dakota often convinced families to head out and see the sights.

Roadside stops lured travelers off the main route, sometimes leading them to climb inside giant dinosaur models.

Striking billboards or tips from fellow drivers often changed plans. In Cabazon, California, huge dinosaur figures welcomed families into the lot for a break.

The journey itself mattered as much as the end point. Ratay recalled his father trying to use every drop of fuel, sometimes leaving the family stranded with an empty tank.

Some travelers camped overnight and discovered hiking, water sports, outdoor cooking, and treats like Jiffy Pop.

Families parked the station wagon, opened the camper, and set up at the site. Campgrounds also let travelers swap tips with others on the road.

To carry extra supplies and provide sleeping space, many families towed campers behind their cars.

Pop up campers hooked onto vehicles like the Vista Cruiser and held chairs, guitars, snacks, and games for the whole trip.

At times families left the car and camper behind to explore on bicycles.

A ride beside a lake or through woods gave everyone time outside the vehicle. For some it was their first real taste of nature.

Travelers who preferred to skip camping often chose convenient motels right off the highway.

Guests from many regions shared stories under one roof. Ratay felt part of a travelers' group, each family swapping tales from their own journeys.

Parents and children cooled off in motel pools after long drives.

Adults chatted poolside about getting lost or asked for tips on the best stops ahead.

Not every motel sat beside the highway.

Some resembled summer camps where families enjoyed group activities before moving on. For many, trying a motorboat or kayak counted as a fresh adventure.

To entertain children, families turned to mini golf or shuffleboard.

Any motel with these games or ping pong was a welcome find. Baseball remained popular, so pickup games of catch helped everyone stretch after hours in the car. Fishing, soccer, rollerblading, and cards also kept kids busy.

Some motels offered game rooms where families competed with new friends.

Ratay recalled racing to the game room upon arrival and enjoying the chance to meet other children before bedtime.

Games continued once the car was packed and the drive resumed.
