In a training event near the California shoreline, personnel released and piloted compact first-person-view drones from UH-1Y Venom and AH-1Z Viper aircraft to back a Marine special operations visit, board, search, and seizure exercise. The service investigated deploying the uncrewed systems for closer vessel inspection prior to team entry, aiming to limit unexpected issues and lower risks, according to an official statement.

Results indicated that helicopter groups could scout targets, designate objectives, and maintain surveillance from secure ranges during sea missions. Ship boarding and capture rank among the most hazardous tasks, so extended observation periods help decrease potential tactical complications.

The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing noted that treating the FPV drones as extensions of helicopter sensors allowed greater control over a high-risk operation through fewer uncertainties.

Small Neros Archer first-person-view drones formed the core of the test, serving as the Corps primary model. These units run several thousand dollars each, and broader purchases are planned, including Army interest in up to one million units across the coming two years.

Tests also assessed helicopters functioning as airborne carriers for compact drones, a tactic gaining traction in current conflicts.

Across Ukraine, forces on both sides have combined larger drones with smaller FPV and interceptor models, using the bigger platforms to transport them nearer to engagement zones before deployment. This method adds miles to drone reach while keeping operators farther from threats.

The latest session builds on a May Marine Corps drill that practiced handing control between ground teams and helicopters plus airborne launches, marking initial steps toward mothership and airborne command concepts.
