Russian security agencies stated on Monday that they had blocked two significant Ukrainian drone strikes aimed at domestic air bases, outlining a secret transport scheme that relied on trailers, balloons, and fixed-wing unmanned aircraft.

Official Russian news service TASS indicated that the Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, identified the intended targets as the Ukrainka air base in the Amur region and the Shagol facility near Chelyabinsk.

Both locations lie far from Ukrainian borders, with Amur situated in the Far East adjacent to China and Chelyabinsk positioned in the Ural Mountains.

According to TASS, the FSB described how the Ukrainian effort started when fixed-wing drones and balloons released first-person-view strike drones in the Bryansk area near the Ukrainian frontier.

Russian authorities noted that the compact drones were moved farther inland inside vehicle-towed trailers fitted with hidden compartments and disguised by loads of ordinary household goods.

The drones received final preparations inside garages close to the air bases, the FSB stated.

The agency informed TASS that officers recovered two ground control units along with 24 first-person-view drones fitted with Western-made neural control modules that supply onboard artificial intelligence capabilities.

Each strike drone carried one kilogram of explosives, while the ground stations included self-destruct mechanisms containing 250 grams of explosives apiece, the FSB reported.

TASS added that the first-person-view drones featured small fragmentation spheres along their edges together with combinations of incendiary, anti-armor, and high-explosive munitions.

Ukraine's GUR intelligence agency and defense ministry offered no immediate replies to comment requests sent outside normal business hours.

The Russian account closely resembles Operation Spiderweb, the surprise Ukrainian drone raid conducted last June that used trucks to position dozens of small drones near four Russian air bases.

Those strikes highlighted the exposure of airfields to drone threats and prompted worldwide notice. Ukraine claimed more than 40 aircraft were destroyed or damaged, including scarce strategic bombers that are difficult to replace.

Artificial intelligence has become an important element in drones fielded by both sides. Onboard algorithms enable a drone to recognize targets and sometimes initiate engagement independently.

Paired with guidance functions, such AI could support coordinated swarm operations among multiple drones.

It would further permit continued attacks even when radio links to human operators face jamming.

The FSB described the Ukrainian drones on Monday as components of a larger scheme for swarm-style drone strikes.

Officials also reported seizing communications equipment used by the individuals moving the drones to reach Ukrainian handlers.

The prior Ukrainian drone operation known as Operation Spiderweb relied on several Russian drivers who transported the unmanned aircraft to the bases. Kyiv indicated the drivers had no knowledge of the cargo.
