When my husband and I purchased our apartment in Kyiv in 2017, we felt excited to create our own family space.

It was a snug 500-square-foot unit with one bedroom, and we carefully arranged every corner for efficiency. Our kitchen table served as my office, while the living room sofa doubled as a guest bed for visiting relatives.

Entertaining guests called for inventive solutions, and with few seats at our modest table, I often served meals in rounds. The process could feel hectic, yet I embraced it fully.

Following the arrival of our son, colorful toys, stacks of diapers, and large baby equipment began to occupy every available spot. Sharing one bedroom among three made daily organization a challenge, but we adapted.

Surprisingly, the close quarters never seemed restrictive at the time. Instead, they fostered closeness and warmth. Then the pandemic arrived.

Extended time indoors left me craving additional room, though we had little chance to adjust before the war in Ukraine prompted our move to Canada in 2022.

Several months after settling in, we rented a two-bedroom house measuring 1,700 square feet. While average by local measures, it felt expansive to us.

It did not take long to adapt to extra space and begin filling it

Initially, the house appeared oversized for our small family. We now enjoyed two bedrooms plus a basement, which greatly expanded our ground-level area.

After years in an apartment, the idea of maintaining so much space seemed tiring at first. Yet that view soon changed.

With room for our items to spread out and a reliable robot vacuum handling chores, daily life took on fresh appeal.

Hosting also became easier, thanks to a basement guest area and a table that comfortably fit larger groups.

Over time, we adopted local customs. Neighbors decorated for holidays, so we joined in and stored seasonal items in our basement without concern.

Many households also kept a separate freezer. Though it seemed excessive for three people, a Costco trip changed my mind, and bulk purchases became routine in our larger home.

Gradually, my identity shifted away from strict minimalism. In Kyiv, I had firmly declined extra gadgets or large toys due to limited space and took pride in a clutter-free home.

Now, with more room and convenient access to goods, I welcomed additions such as a food dehydrator and a spacious couch we had long desired. Storage worries faded because we finally had the capacity.

Our family has flourished with greater breathing room

This change ran deeper than acquiring and storing more belongings. The expanded space allowed our family to breathe and develop.

In Kyiv, tight quarters had shaped our routines and minimalist habits, but here the extra area opened new possibilities.

I grew more sociable and at ease, eager to welcome others. Our home now hosts friends, weekend meals, and backyard gatherings.

Living small had been an intimate chapter that instilled purpose and appreciation. Yet the ability to thrive, entertain, and observe our family expand has redefined what home means, and returning to 500 square feet no longer appeals.
