This first-person account draws from a discussion with Ananya Joshi, a 26-year-old Indian citizen who lost her position in 2025, departed the United States due to visa rules, and relocated to Germany. The narrative has been trimmed and clarified.

The vision of life in America came to me through my father, who longed to move there yet never had the resources.

In New Delhi, a small Statue of Liberty figurine sat in our house as a reminder. My father put money aside over many years to let me attend school in the United States.

After finishing my undergraduate studies in India, I arrived in Illinois during 2022 for a master's program in biotechnology at Northwestern University.

I finished the degree in 2024 and held a position in the country until an unexpected layoff forced me to depart.

Living it up in Chicago

While still a student, I joined a startup that focused on lab-grown meat through a six-month research stint. That experience turned into a permanent role with roughly $75,000 in annual pay, all under an F-1 OPT visa.

My role as a bioprocess scientist involved creating ways to increase production of cultivated meat on a larger scale.

The schedule stayed intense, often stretching across seven days, yet the chance to work on fresh ideas and gain skills daily kept me motivated through the pace.

Chicago offered advantages such as lower housing costs. My Evanston apartment ran $1,500 each month and sat roughly 20 minutes from the city center. Spending stayed under $2,000, which allowed road trips and other travel.

Visa concerns soon appeared. The firm had said it would support an H-1B application, but later found it could not finish the process because it lacked full E-Verify setup.

My OPT period neared its end in July 2025, and the heavy workload left little room to search for new roles.

In May 2025 I informed the company I wanted to step down or shift to part-time hours so I could use the final weeks to plan ahead.

They ended my employment the following day.

Saying goodbye to the US

I began sending applications across many cities, mostly in the United States but also across Europe, Canada, and Australia.

Despite reaching about 20 interviews and advancing to later stages several times, no offers arrived. This period ran from May through July 2025 amid growing immigration changes in the United States.

Two offers eventually came, one in Germany and one in Canada. Colleagues praised Germany's steady environment and strong worker protections, and after recent setbacks I chose that path for security.

In January I moved to Rostock, a modest city roughly three hours north of Berlin, to join another lab-grown meat startup.

New routines required adjustment. The firm holds bold targets, yet the research steps involve more layers of approval than I saw in the United States.

Adjusting to small-town life

Both New Delhi and Chicago moved at a quick rhythm, so settling into a smaller city proved challenging at first.

Rostock stands out for its cleanliness, sense of safety, and easy walking routes. A scenic beach and nearby trail add appeal.

Still, options for activities remain limited. Language differences also surface, since English works at the office but German dominates elsewhere. I have begun language lessons.

Travel connections are limited as well, with the closest airports in Hamburg and Berlin more than three hours away. For someone who moved from abroad, quick flight access matters, especially in case of urgent travel.

Just before the layoff I had begun seeing my current partner, Ishan.

We now manage a long-distance relationship across the United States and Germany. I have visited once, yet he cannot leave the United States at present because, although selected for an H-1B visa, he has not secured a stamping appointment at a consulate in India.

Not sure what the future holds

Uncertainty remains, since I would prefer to return to the United States yet cannot overlook the difficulties I faced. It seems unwise to move back until conditions improve.

I miss the rapid setting the United States offers, where ambition feels limitless. The range of roles and funding in my area still draws me, and I hope a return becomes possible.

While in the United States I expected to follow the usual route of an H-1B visa followed by a green card application. Now I see other lifestyles and have grown more open to different choices.

I have thought about launching my own project in India, perhaps in Mumbai or Bangalore, after spending more time in Germany. India offers strong prospects close to those in the United States, with room to keep advancing my career.
