Business Insider aviation reporters have sampled economy cabins on more than two dozen carriers yet Emirates Airbus A350 stands out with the most refined coach product seen so far.

The Dubai carrier introduced the U-Dream headrest on Monday and we sampled the design at the Farnborough Airshow in the UK.

The headrest includes two adjustable side wings that fold inward to cradle the head much like a traditional neck pillow.

Emirates A350 economy cabin already offers extras such as electronic window shades and Bluetooth pairing for personal wireless headphones.

While many carriers focus spending on premium cabins it is encouraging to see continued upgrades in economy seating.

Emirates aims to deliver the strongest economy product in the industry.

Passengers may skip premium economy or business upgrades yet a noticeably better coach cabin could still influence their choice.

Here is what we found during our tour of the A350.

We toured an Emirates Airbus A350-900 at the Farnborough Airshow this week.

Only three A350s currently carry the new headrests but Emirates intends to equip all 25 aircraft by year end.

The airline also plans to roll out the design across most Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 fleets beginning in 2027.

The economy cabin is full of perks that bring it a step ahead of other airlines.

Economy travelers represent the largest share of passengers so it matters when carriers demonstrate ongoing investment in their experience.

Seats on the A350 are arranged 3-3-3 with generous legroom and a seat pitch of 31 to 32 inches.

But the new U-Dream headrest is especially innovative.

Emirates President Tim Clark noted that the carrier never stops improving customer experience and has found a meaningful way to boost long-haul comfort in economy.

The U-Dream transforms rest by fully supporting the neck so travelers can skip neck pillows entirely he added.

It further illustrates the airline commitment to economy passengers and reinforces its position as the best in class.

It looks like a neck pillow with adjustable wings that cradle your head.

Passengers can therefore sleep without their head dropping forward or to the side and waking with neck strain.

The headrest also slides vertically and tilts to suit a range of passenger heights and builds.

It is clear that Emirates cares about making even the coach cabin feel premium.

The A350 marks the first time electronic window shades appear throughout every cabin on an Emirates aircraft.

Premium economy and business class offer dual shades while economy receives only the full blackout option.

Its refreshing to see investment in economy instead of just the premium cabins.

The carrier described the headrest rollout as backed by significant investment.

Emirates benefits from state ownership unlike many US carriers.

United Airlines has also introduced economy improvements including Bluetooth headphone connectivity on its inflight entertainment systems.

United further plans a self-serve snack bar on upcoming A321XLR aircraft and a convertible economy bed called the Relax Row on its Boeing widebodies.

It could be a game changer for Emirates and other airlines might follow suit.

Emirates operates a hub-and-spoke network that funnels passengers through Dubai for connections on long-haul routes.

Small comfort gains therefore matter greatly when travelers face many hours in economy.

Recent regional tensions have reduced demand as some passengers seek nonstop options to bypass Gulf layovers.

Emirates also competes with fellow Middle Eastern carriers running similar networks.

While those rivals boast strong business-class products the U-Dream headrest gives Emirates an edge in the economy segment.
