NEW YORK - A preliminary accord aimed at halting the Iran conflict prompts questions on how quickly costs for gasoline, groceries, airline tickets and other affected goods might decline.

Analysts caution against expecting rapid changes.

Even once crude shipments resume from the region, economists and sector specialists note that noticeable relief at pumps, stores and elsewhere could lag for consumers.

The closure around the Strait of Hormuz hit not just oil and fuel flows but also chains supplying fertilizer, food items and apparel. Companies anticipate sustained elevated expenses, signaling similar preparation needed for buyers.

"Despite months of fighting, it remains unclear what gains have improved conditions for American buyers," noted Brett House, an economist at Columbia Business School. "By most indicators, both U.S. consumers and the broader world face worse outcomes from these events."

Assuming the U.S.-Iran pact endures, specialists outline the likely pace of any easing in effects over coming weeks.

Oil benchmarks dropped to near 80 dollars per barrel on news of the deal, up from 67 dollars beforehand yet below the peak above 120 dollars seen mid-conflict.

Refineries often secure crude supplies weeks ahead, delaying the pass-through of lower prices into processed fuels.

"Gasoline prices tend to ease gradually because feedstock moves slowly through processing and delivery before reaching buyers," explained Michael Lynch of the Energy Policy Research Foundation.

Areas short on refining capacity, including the U.S. West Coast, may see slower adjustments, according to Mark Barteau at Texas A and M University.

Several Asian and African nations dependent on Middle East oil faced school and office shutdowns plus remote-work directives, per the International Energy Agency.

"Returning to normal involves extended coordination across many nations and actors," Barteau added. "Any accord to reopen the strait marks only an initial step."

Travel specialists have cautioned for months that airfares would not fall right away even with an end to fighting.

Carriers lock in fuel purchases ahead, tweak routes slowly and set fares largely on demand patterns, so cheaper oil and jet fuel filter into ticket prices over weeks or longer.

"Reductions in flying costs appear unlikely through this summer," said Columbia's House.

Fuel add-ons applied by some non-U.S. carriers could offer early relief to passengers, observed Gordon Ho at the University of Southern California business school.

"Buyers will question ongoing fuel surcharges," Ho noted.

Grocery relief from a reopened strait will also unfold gradually, said David Ortega of Michigan State University.

Fuel represents 15 to 30 percent of food costs, estimates the Independent Grocers Alliance.

Yet energy disruptions like this one ripple through supply networks over months before lifting store prices, and reversals take even longer amid uncertainty, Ortega explained.

"Food inflation pressures likely continue for months ahead," he said. "Reopening details remain unclear, and fuel, diesel plus fertilizer prices will need time to normalize."

Rabobank projects war-linked food inflation peaking next year across Europe. U.S. grocery prices are forecast to climb 3.2 percent this year versus a 2.6 percent historical norm, per the Department of Agriculture.

Strait reopening would aid farmers worldwide, as roughly 30 percent of global fertilizer transited the route pre-conflict. Prices jumped with the cutoff, and volumes may recover slowly.

Shortages now could worsen later effects.

Farmers in many regions plant without adequate fertilizer or at high costs for inputs and transport. The United Nations World Food Program anticipates severe yield drops, pressuring prices and supplies for months.

U.S. shoe retailers hoped falling gasoline prices would boost back-to-school spending, noted Andy Polk of the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America.

Yet firms expect their costs to stay high, with two-to-three-month finished-goods stocks and upcoming orders likely reflecting pricier materials, Polk said.

Most U.S. footwear is imported, and shipping expenses may remain elevated through 2026 and 2027.

Last year's tariffs complicate absorbing or passing on increases, he added. Footwear prices rose 5.2 percent year-over-year in May per official data.

Judah Levine at Freightos noted the strait issues touched 2 to 3 percent of container volume but broader oil and disruption effects hit shipping harder.

Josh Steinitz of ShipStation Global said shoppers could see higher delivery fees and stock shortages online into year-end.

"Fuel surcharges feeding into shipping and then consumer prices will linger from major carriers," Steinitz said.
