I never anticipated launching into adulthood quite so early, yet that is precisely what occurred when my parents asked me to leave their house at 17.

I discovered how harsh existence can prove, spending a year in a shelter for those without homes. I often wept at bedtime and realized I alone could rely on myself for assistance.

I left high school early and juggled three positions to get by. During one role, I encountered a woman and began seeing her while still in the shelter.

We wed three months after our first meeting and shared an apartment. Freedom felt wonderful, yet my duties were only beginning.

I have long served as the main earner and backbone for others

My initial spouse and I raised three children, facing all the costs and duties that parenthood brings.

I obtained my commercial license and secured work hauling freight, which helped sustain my household.

Later I launched a company that thrived and expanded rapidly. Each year brought greater earnings along with added obligations as a parent, partner, and companion.

Even once our marriage concluded in divorce, I continued as the chief supporter for my loved ones.

Greater earnings attracted more reliance from those around me

Relatives and acquaintances looked to me for monetary help because my ventures prospered. They requested loans, presents, and assistance with their expenses.

They also sought me out for direction, advice, and counsel because I had navigated many hardships. I remained the constant presence - the dependable figure.

This pattern persisted for years until the burden began to affect me deeply.

By my late thirties, emotional fatigue set in and I sensed confinement.

Now at 45, physical, mental, and emotional strain from perpetual availability has pushed me near collapse.

Professional guidance has provided tools

I am grateful for counseling. Sessions over the last five years have equipped me with sound strategies for managing stress.

A small circle of supportive individuals also recognizes my load and offers calm. These few ask nothing in return and serve as safe outlets.

Despite the fatigue, such resources have eased the ongoing demands of being everyone's go-to person.

I am claiming time to focus inward and nurture my well-being

As a man and guide, I have felt compelled to stay strong and open to every request, yet that must change.

The strain has nearly overwhelmed me. I recognize the need for a chapter centered on my own priorities, allowing others to handle their challenges independently.

Counseling clarified that outward strength does not always reflect inner strain. I must strengthen my core further.

This period will involve reduced availability, more measured financial help, deliberate replies to messages, and stepping back as the default source of support.

And that will be acceptable.

Following 27 years in this role, I must attend to my own care, and that is the path I will follow.
