Market participants are preparing for a potential interest rate increase from the ECB this Thursday. Analysts anticipate a quarter-point rise, likely impacting economic expansion and company profits. Attention also turns to signals about additional adjustments ahead.

ING noted in a Thursday morning report that the central bank is projected to lift rates by 25 basis points from 2.0% to 2.25%, accompanied by a firm stance, though exceeding expectations has become more challenging. Even as oil prices probed fresh lows earlier in the week, the euro curve points toward three total increases.

Equity indices throughout Europe began the session in positive territory even as Asian shares declined following further losses in AI-linked equities on Wall Street the prior day.

The Euro Stoxx 50 advanced 1.2% at the open, whereas the wider Stoxx 600 remained essentially unchanged during early hours.

Germany's Dax and France's CAC 40 each gained 1%, while Britain's FTSE 100 posted a 1.2% advance. Italy's FTSE MIB climbed 0.7% in comparison.

Elsewhere, Asian equities declined broadly on Thursday after renewed selling in artificial intelligence shares pressured US markets, even as crude prices climbed.

Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 0.5%, South Korea's Kospi eased 0.2%, and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.2%. Taiwan's Taiex dropped 0.4%.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose 0.2%, while Shanghai's Composite index declined 0.2%.

On Wall Street Wednesday, the S&P 500 dropped 1.6% for its first back-to-back decline in three weeks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.9%, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 2%.

US markets have faced turbulence since the previous week, when AI equities reversed after reaching record peaks. Investors assess whether the recent retreat has tempered excessive optimism or marks the start of an extended correction.

Super Micro Computer, a provider of AI servers, plunged 28% after disclosing plans late Tuesday to raise $7 billion via common stock and convertible preferred shares. Firms frequently pursue such funding when valuations are high, though the action can reduce existing ownership stakes.

Micron Technology fluctuated before closing down 4.7%. The shares have shown notable swings lately, including a 7.7% drop last Thursday, a further 13.3% decline on Friday, and a 9.9% rebound on Monday. Even so, the stock remains up 212.5% for the year.

Nvidia, the chipmaker now valued near $4.9 trillion amid the AI surge, weighed most heavily on the S&P 500 after declining 3.7%. Broadcom, another key AI player, fell 5.1%.

Some selling in AI-related names may also reflect investors raising cash ahead of several prominent US stock debuts. SpaceX's initial public offering could occur later this week.

Shares of firms with substantial fuel expenses also pressured the broader market. United Airlines declined 6.2%, and cruise operator Carnival dropped 6.3% as oil prices rose amid ongoing conflict with Iran.

Oil prices and US inflation

Brent crude advanced 1.8% to $93.10 a barrel on Wednesday after President Donald Trump stated that Iran would pay the price for stalled talks between the sides regarding the conflict. The war has largely shut the Strait of Hormuz to tankers, interrupting crude flows from the Persian Gulf to global buyers.

Elevated oil costs have intensified inflation. Data released Wednesday indicated US consumer prices rose in May at the quickest yearly rate in three years.

Traders increasingly expect the Federal Reserve to raise its key rate at least once this year amid stubborn inflation and a strong labor market.

Higher yields can curb growth and affect various assets, including equities and cryptocurrencies. They often impact the highest-valued holdings most severely, prompting some observers to suggest AI enthusiasm has created a market bubble.

In early European trading, Brent crude gained 0.5% to $93.60 a barrel, while US benchmark crude rose 0.7% to $90.70.

The US dollar stood at 160.58 Japanese yen in morning trade. The euro edged higher to $1.1542, and the UK pound reached $1.3377.

Gold prices fell 0.6% to $4,109.60 an ounce.
