Israeli Unemployment in Hi-Tech Climbs Amid AI Advances

Unemployment numbers in the technology field have reached fresh peaks, with more than 16,000 workers signing on for benefits lately, Inbal Mashash of the Israel Employment Service stated during a Tuesday broadcast on 103FM.

"We observe a clear rise in hi-tech job seekers. This stands as a record for ordinary times. Relative to patterns from recent years and compared to 2022, the figure has tripled, which signals a definite concern and points to an issue," she noted.

On the makeup of those seeking work, Mashash highlighted that developers face the heaviest impact. "Half are software professionals with significant exposure to artificial intelligence. This creates a direct link between the growth in job seekers and wider AI adoption. These individuals come from the heart of the field, each holding over eight years of experience."

When asked about support for seasoned staff displaced by new tools, Mashash said: "In the age of artificial intelligence, upskilling is essential for all, not just within hi-tech. Our focus covers the entire labor market, which evolves rapidly."

"Hi-tech drives economic expansion. Roughly 14,000 openings exist in the sector plus another 4,000 tech roles beyond it. We expect some who complete targeted training will return to the field."

Employment Service Aids Placement in Traditional Sectors

Mashash described ongoing efforts: "We partner with the Innovation Authority, the AI headquarters and the Manufacturers Association to place workers in non-tech areas like traditional industries. This brings mutual gains."

She projected the pattern ahead: "We anticipate a further rise over the next months before a gradual easing."
