Tech professionals may find that AI is not eliminating their positions, yet it is reshaping the qualities employers seek in candidates.

A study from labor data firm Draup indicates AI is transforming technical positions without diminishing overall demand for skilled workers in the field.

The findings draw from 2.85 million job postings spanning June 2025 to June 2026, following multiple rounds of tech sector layoffs where some firms promoted AI as a means to reduce headcount.

Draup concludes that AI is broadening opportunities rather than contracting them, noting over 40,000 active listings each for software engineering, data engineering, and DevOps positions.

"AI does not lessen the requirement for technical expertise, but it does alter the traits that make such expertise essential," stated Draup CEO Vijay Swaminathan.

Transforming All Positions

Every technical function is evolving due to AI and automation, though the effects differ across areas, according to the analysis.

Abilities focused on judgment, design, and accountability stand out as more resilient amid AI advancements. The report highlights that deep role knowledge and strong communication skills are expected to stay critical.

Key areas like systems design, debugging, data governance, and model evaluation continue to hold value, whereas repetitive tasks such as standard coding and manual testing face higher automation risks.

Reviewing over 1 million software development engineer descriptions, Draup noted that debugging and thoughtful code evaluation will likely stay vital, while basic code writing or syntax memorization may decline in importance.

Adjustments for Newer Professionals

Many postings now reference AI tools including GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and Claude, appearing across more than 60,000 listings in the nine categories examined.

Although overall demand for tech roles shows growth, entry-level positions present a more nuanced outlook.

"Requirements for junior hires are increasing most rapidly, as the basic duties once used for training are among the first to be automated," the report observed.

This trend may prompt companies to revise standard methods for recruitment, training, and advancement paths.

One suggestion involves accelerating development of design, review, and decision-making capabilities for newer staff within months rather than years on the job.

Ultimately, the analysis recommends that organizations shift focus from current task assignments toward enduring capabilities that retain value even when AI handles routine work.
