My initial professional role after university started in 2020 as a remote program manager at an environmental nonprofit. It seemed ideal until the organization required rotating office attendance.

The two-hour commute combined with caring for an aging dog made me question the setup. Following the loss of my cherished companion I regretted the time spent commuting or in the office rather than sharing those final months.

Completely disheartened I relocated across the country to stay with my mother.

Feeling grief and uncertainty while struggling to secure steady employment I pursued a major shift. The summer of 2024 involved work at Burning Man and since then I have embraced van living through work camping via seasonal or gig positions.

Road life became appealing while existing abilities opened job options in new places

Reduced costs showed that nearly any position could sustain the lifestyle. I applied my background and enthusiasm for nature to roles in conservation.

Each summer now involves positions at state and national parks where I instruct young people on removing dead trees creating paths constructing rock walls and maintaining trails for enjoyment.

Van life as a gig worker has also supported other interests like music. Outside park seasons I attend festivals handling customer service tasks such as operating lost-and-found areas or guiding vehicles in lots.

Helpful attendees and lively settings make these among the most rewarding service roles. They also provide free festival access allowing time to enjoy music and explore.

Like many travelers I run a personal venture as a mobile loctician providing dreadlock services by visiting clients at homes or other locations.

The client network has expanded gradually across cities and states as I adapt to fully mobile operations.

Planning and flexibility have become key to managing the routine

As a careful planner I apply this to travel arrangements. Jobs are selected according to location and season allowing drives between assignments without retracing routes.

Yet strong interest in an opportunity leads to parking the van and flying there. Each year arrangements are made to work at Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas as a favorite event right after my birthday.

The lifestyle involves more than enjoyment. Van living promotes presence but finances can slip without forward preparation.

Since positions lack continuity the search for the next summer role often begins before the current one concludes. Building connections matters as each fellow worker may offer future opportunities.

Work camping can appear restrictive since it involves on-site duties at fixed times and places. Unlike some van dwellers I cannot depart an area due to weather extend festival stays or join impromptu outings.

Even with these limits the arrangement is preferable to prior office roles. It enables integration into visited communities and connections with others seeking similar independence.

Each day brings anticipation for the coming experience making obstacles worthwhile.
