This account is drawn from an interview with Valerie Cherry, 68, a clinical psychologist living in Tampa, Florida. It has been adjusted for length and clarity.

My husband Glenn, also 68, and I felt thrilled when our first grandchild, a girl, arrived four years ago.

Our son Jamal is our only child, and our family shares a tight bond.

We traveled from Tampa to assist him and his wife Sierra, who live about 1,000 miles away in Houston, during the early baby phase.

Those visits ran from four to six weeks, involving frequent travel between the cities.

We stayed either with the family or in short-term rentals to allow breathing room for everyone.

It was rewarding to offer direct help, as Jamal works in finance and Sierra in forensic psychology, both with demanding schedules.

Back in Florida we enjoyed an active routine in our secure suburban neighborhood, where Glenn works as a relief veterinarian and we maintained strong social ties, including with college alumni from Georgia through book groups and charity events.

When our grandson arrived two years ago, the pattern of extended visits continued as we shuttled between locations.

We Explored Housing Options in Houston

Shortly after the birth, Jamal and Sierra asked how we felt about being absent and whether we might consider moving nearer.

We felt conflicted, wanting closeness with the grandchildren yet treasuring our Tampa base, but we began viewing properties in Houston.

Any purchase there would likely mean suburban living with a roughly 40-minute drive due to heavy traffic.

We also preferred to avoid new tax and insurance obligations in Texas while keeping our Florida home.

Online research led me to a flexible building called Landing in downtown Houston, just over 10 minutes from the family.

This setup allowed stays of any duration with a membership fee for a furnished two-bedroom unit, so we only needed to bring a few kitchen items.

Discovering a Balanced Arrangement

The schedule now averages seven months yearly in Houston and five in Florida, with our 4,800-square-foot Tampa house remaining the primary residence.

The Houston apartment measures 1,600 square feet yet includes appealing amenities such as two pools, play areas, and a basketball court.

This solution lets us enjoy meaningful time with the grandchildren, including during parental date nights or weekend trips.

We are currently organizing Halloween activities, which hold special importance for the whole family.

Maintaining Our Sense of Self Beyond Grandparenting

When a child needs pickup from day care or school due to illness, one of us can step in to provide extra support.

We retain our personal identities while serving as Nana and Papa, and we continue regular flights to Florida for visits with longtime friends.

Neighbors watch the house during absences, which brings peace of mind.

We recognize our good fortune in this setup, which truly offers the advantages of both locations.
