Interior design styles shift frequently, moving from bold powder room patterns to ornate ceiling treatments. While certain looks dominate current spaces, others remain less common.

Business Insider consulted with interior designers about the trends they would prefer to see adopted more widely in residences. This is their input.

“Grandmillennial” touches can add some character to a home.

Shannon Ggem, owner of Shannon Ggem Design, hopes the grandmillennial approach of blending striking antique patterns with contemporary looks would appear more often. She noted that small artistic details, such as a hand-painted doorframe section or custom tile, can truly enhance a room.

Sconces can help a home feel cozier.

Alison Ames, senior designer at Lark Interiors, said she would love to see more wall lights because they offer an easy path to a welcoming atmosphere. "Sconces provide a stylish accent and work well as a soft night or mood light. With many affordable and battery-powered choices available, you can upgrade your space without any wiring," Ames said.

Powder rooms are great places to incorporate fun patterns and bold designs.

Kristen Kells, owner of Kristen Kells Creative, advised using bold choices when styling a powder room. Since the space is compact, strong colors or patterns can make it stand out without becoming too much.

Biophilic design elements can elevate a home, especially for plant lovers.

Biophilic design builds a link between people and nature by adding plants or features that echo the natural world. Bree Steele, interior designer and trade-accounts manager at RJ Living, noted that this style suits those who enjoy surrounding themselves with greenery. "You can add more plants through living walls, indoor greenery, and natural light to form a soothing space that ties the indoors to the outdoors," she told BI. "The room will also feel fresher and more lively."

Decorative ceilings give homes more personality.

Jan Odesanya, principal interior designer at Mondän and Co Interiors, told BI that homeowners should consider how ceilings fit into overall design. "We often focus on walls and floors, yet ceilings provide an open area for creativity," she said. "Picture a dining room ceiling in a rich, bold color or a bedroom ceiling with subtle textured wallpaper." She added that ceilings offer a strong way to bring personality and luxury into any room.

Despite being extremely versatile, canopy beds are often underused.

Ames said she would like to see canopy beds appear in more bedrooms. "Canopy beds add visual weight to a room and bring elegance and grandeur to the overall feel," Ames told BI. "They are also very flexible and can be styled for looks ranging from traditional to modern."

A dedicated wellness space can transform a home into a sanctuary.

Deana Duffek, founder and lead designer of Pure Design House, hopes more homeowners will create dedicated wellness spaces. "While home gyms and spas are growing in popularity, I would love to see hair salons, saunas, and cold plunges become part of everyday home design," Duffek told BI. "These areas support self-care and add convenience, delivering a transformative experience that boosts mental and physical well-being."

Personal art pieces can help tell a story.

"Gallery walls are nice, but I am always drawn to homes that display art with a personal link," Odesanya told BI. She suggests adding items with personal meaning, such as family photos, vintage posters, or a child's artwork. "These pieces share a story and turn a house into a home," Odesanya said.

Design choices should incorporate drama and personality.

Joyce Huston, lead interior designer and cofounder of Decorilla, told BI she has moved past neutral interiors and prefers homes that show personality and drama. She especially likes the Western Gothic style, which pairs dark color palettes with vintage designs and textures. "Western Gothic is the trend I am hoping to see more of," she said. "It blends vintage charm with modern edge. The dark tones, rustic textures, and mix of elements create an inviting and striking space." She noted that the style works well across different rooms and style preferences.
