The latter portion of the year depends on a fragile sequence of events, based on a recent analysis from Oxford Economics, where the stability of the US-Iran accord serves as the pivotal element influencing subsequent developments.

"Its endurance will decide if the worldwide economy receives an energy-led disinflation boost or faces another petroleum disruption," noted chief global economist Ryan Sweet in the briefing, describing the pact as "the central factor that will decide if additional uncertainties grow or ease".

The firm anticipates the global economy to pick up pace, projecting annualized expansion of 3.1% in the second half versus an estimated 1.6% in the first, driven mainly by lower petroleum costs passing to household earnings, though Sweet assigns the chances of securing a lasting pact at "a coin toss".

Should the ceasefire endure, Oxford Economics anticipates Brent crude settling in the low $70s per barrel, reducing inflation and easing financial conditions in emerging markets along with tech valuations.

Should it collapse, the effects would extend beyond the petroleum sector alone.

Early on Wednesday, the US armed forces struck Iran following claims that Tehran hit three vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded with attacks aimed at Bahrain and Kuwait. The regional exchanges heightened concerns that the temporary pact to end hostilities in the conflict might unravel. Yet the exchanges followed a series of comparable incidents during the accord's unsteady pause, and neither side immediately indicated withdrawal from discussions.

Petroleum costs responded to the strikes by rising more than 3% by Wednesday morning, with the global benchmark Brent exceeding $76 a barrel.

"A breakdown in the peace agreement would not only elevate petroleum costs but would also heighten strain on AI supply networks in Asia, compel central banks toward tighter policy, restrict financial conditions, and potentially alter results in the US midterms and Israeli votes [...] the effects spread rapidly," Sweet noted.

A Toss-Up Involving a Twenty-Dollar Difference

Not all share Oxford Economics' projection for petroleum costs.

Morgan Stanley's mid-year assessment, released in May, projected crude returning near $90 a barrel by year-end, a difference of roughly $20 versus Oxford Economics' outlook that reflects contrasting wagers on the same peace effort.

The World Bank remains more guarded, projecting Brent crude to average near $94 a barrel this year while cautioning that global GDP expansion will ease to 2.5% in 2026.

Considering how the recent strikes test the delicate pause, Sweet remarked, "Movement through the Strait of Hormuz acts as a solid indicator. The pact pledged to fully resume traffic through the narrow passage within 30 days, positioning mid-July as the initial firm cutoff," he noted.

"A steady return to 75% or higher of pre-conflict traffic by mid-July would raise the likelihood the agreement holds and the reverse," Sweet added.

The additional signal, he states, involves whether Iran formally cites the pact's Lebanon provision regarding Israeli actions, and if its reply takes military or verbal form.

Levies, Commerce and AI

Commerce represents another uncertainty that could alter the outlook.

US Section 122 levies are set to lapse on 24 July, yet Washington has prepared substitute duties under Section 301. Oxford Economics expects the shifts to elevate effective duty rates from late July as the US aims to sustain monthly duty collections between $25 billion and $30 billion.

Europe is adopting a firmer position as well. The European Commission maintains more than 50 trade-protection probes against China, up from 17 a year earlier, and intends to present a wider economic security plan by September.

These commerce frictions also connect to the AI surge that has supported financial markets this year.

Oxford Economics observes the US AI sector relies substantially on semiconductors and related equipment from Northeast and Southeast Asia, the areas most exposed to any further interference with commodities moving through the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, the Bank for International Settlements warned that the AI expansion increasingly depends on unclear "circular funding" among chip producers, cloud providers and artificial intelligence facilities, plus lightly supervised private credit, where lending to the field has risen fourfold in five years.

The BIS's Asia-Pacific head, Zhang Tao, noted that the sector's dependence on non-bank financing means an AI reversal could spark a sharper and quicker adjustment than a standard banking crisis.

Sweet simulated what such a reversal might entail.

"We have developed a so-called tech reversal scenario where US technology equities drop by 25% over a year," he stated to Euronews.

According to Sweet, such an event would cause the US economy to "slow sharply", extending to technology exporters and investor confidence globally, resulting in worldwide growth 1.1 percentage points under Oxford Economics' baseline next year.

Central Banks, Votes and the Schedule

The final elements involve policy and politics.

Oxford Economics anticipates the leading central banks to turn more accommodative than markets currently expect, though they could shift rapidly if traffic through the Strait of Hormuz weakens or AI-component costs indicate supply pressure.

The next check is the Federal Reserve's rate choice under chair Kevin Warsh later this month, following June's weak employment figures.

Further ahead are November's US midterms and Israel's general vote, due by late October, both of which could shape the Middle East peace effort. In September, German state votes could also examine the coalition supporting Germany's fiscal approach, a major influence on the eurozone economy.

Oxford Economics also notes real potential gains, from stronger AI-led productivity to an EU economy that performed better than expected in the second quarter.

Whether the strength in Europe proves lasting will appear first in Germany and in credit figures, Sweet contends.

"If firms were managing margin pressure from the rise in energy costs without reducing investment and using credit facilities, that would bolster the view that underlying momentum in the economy exceeds our prior estimate," he told Euronews, noting that a drop in eurozone bank lending would indicate the opposite.

It is worth noting that the average Oxford Economics forecast error is nearly a full percentage point, and the uncertainty around this projection in particular exceeds the norm.
